15th century priest's house adjacent to charming village church
Only a few minutes from Fivizzano, just above the small hamlet of Pognana, there is the historic parish church of S. Maria Assunta and rectory, the 'Canonica di Pognana'. Within the old rectory is a spacious apartment on one floor, big enough for up to six people. In the living/dining-room a small part of a fresco has been restored. This dates back to the 15th century just like the marble column of the window and the kitchen’s lintel stone with three important stems. The rectory overlooks a stunning view of the Rosaro-valley, wooded hills, olive groves, the Malaspina-Castle of Verrucola and the nearby centre of Fivizzano. From the terrace in front of the house and from the living/dining-room and two of the bedrooms, you can see the “Monte Sagro' which belongs to the Apuan Alps peeping over the hills. On another terrace and in the space in front of the house, you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside.

Fivizzano is a small Medici town in the northern tip of Tuscany, between Liguria and Emilia Romagna. This area is called Lunigiana. It is situated between the Apuan Alps and the Apennine offering good walking in the hills and alpine walking and climbing. The name Lunigiana comes from 'Luni', a roman harbour town (now inland from the sea) lying between Sarzana and the mouth of the river Magra. At Luni, there is an open air museum showing the archaeological excavations. Roman legionaries came to the Lunigiana to enjoy the then mild and healthy climate during the unfriendly winters elsewhere. The presence of the Stone Age, enigmatic Stele-Statues, the Romanesque churches and numerous castles impart a mystical touch to this area. All this in a nearly untouched nature, full of aroma, light and colour is made possible by the unique combination of alpine peaks and the sea. Lovely views over mountains, valleys, olive groves, chestnut forests invite one to stay, enjoy and relax.

Description of the Lunigiana area
A vacation in Lunigiana in the commune of Fivizzano means a vacation in a green, unspoilt, mainly undiscovered part of Tuscany, far away from crowded tourist tracks but still close enough to important attractions like Florence, Pisa, Lucca and the “Cinque Terre” . Here Mediterranean mixes with the alpine, experienced by tasting the numerous and unusual meals served in the “trattorias” of the area. If you have ever tasted “Testaroli al Pesto” you will understand….. In the walled Medieval town Fivizzano, you will find everything you need: small shops selling local products, mini-supermarkets, butcher, baker, chemist, shoemaker, cafés, delicious ice cream!, restaurants and pizzerias. You can hire a tennis-court and nearby there is a big outdoor swimming-pool and riding-stable. Unbeatable is the “Piazza Medicea” with it’s Medici fountain and two Bars, just decide which one, ice cream or beer and…... having decided, you can sit there for hours, watching Italian life go by...........
Places within reach
An hour’s drive away are the sandy beaches of the Versilia coast, the Gulf of Poets (La Spezia) and boats to take you to the famous Cinque Terre. To the south is Carrara and the marble quarries, Sarzana, home of a renowned antiques fair, and Equi Terme, once a Roman spa with its thermal pools and caves. There are also museums and castles to visit, and local trains wind down through the beautiful Garfagnana valley to Lucca and Pisa for connections to Florence, Siena and the rest of Tuscany and Italy beyond.
