Across the road from Spoleto park with its posh restaurant and bar nestling in the trees, 3 minutes walk to Piazza Liberta, the Roman amphitheatre and the shops, bars and restaurants in the centre of Spoleto, these apartments are just a short bus-ride to the train station, from where you can get to practically anywhere in Italy. Just round the corner from the grand Vialle Giacomo Matteotti, otherwise known as “ the passeggiata” – famous because it originated here, these fabulous apartments (originally owned by the builder of the block and, you know they always keep the best for themselves !) are in a 5 year old, purpose built block of up-market apts, inhabited by a handful of wealthy, professional Italians. Staying in Spoleto is like staying in a fairy-tale castle, peppered with piazzas, sprinkled with bars, restaurants and shops amidst a maze of tunnelled, cobbled lanes and alley-ways, all leading skywards to the famous Rocca, the aquaduct & some of the best views in the world. This whole surreal setting is akin to a stage-set in the making, fringed by mountains, olive groves and vineyards and a mixture of medieval monasteries, towns, cities and tiny hill-top villages - all beckoning a visit ! However, for me, Spoleto is the ultimate temptress. Once under her spell, you are lost forever in her beauty. It requires will-power to leave this place, even for a short while. It is, quite simply, the most captivating city in Italy, never mind Umbria, Venice being on a par – the difference being that Venice has the water and Spoleto has the mountains. And, like Venice, Spoleto has a history to be reckoned with - it predates Rome. Easy access to Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, Rome, Trevi, Perugia etc.

There is an elevator to the apartment, However, if you consider yourself elderly and/or infirm, please note that there are steps to the bedrooms and more steps to the terrace - there are hand-rails. There are several beautiful, communal pools in the area, including an Olympic sized pool that is about 20 mins door-to-door by public transport. All of them have picnic areas, a bar and the usual facilities. There is a private tennis club minutes away by foot that welcomes day guests. The private 1 car garage is 50 Euros/week - it is next to the elevator up to the apartment - must be booked in advance. However, you can park a few minutes down the hill for free. You can hire a mobile phone that works on a pay as you go system for 100 euros refundable deposit - must be booked in advance.

Our time in Spoleto was exactly what a vacation should be.

The Penthouse on the Park was absolutely perfect for our family. It was comfortable, well-equipped, and in a perfect location for exploring the beauty and history of Umbria. We loved the fact that the region wasn't too overrun by tourists, and that the locals were so forgiving of how badly we spoke Italian!

As an active family with teenagers, we took a lot of day trips and feel like we were really able to see the region, either walking through towns or hiking between them.

The area is safe, the food is fabulous (great gelato flavors in town!), as are the people, the sunshine, and our memories.
