The walking and hiking in Umbria is extensive, the lush river valleys provide a relaxing, meandering stroll, or for a more strenuous walk, there are plenty of hills, the largest of which is Mt Vettore.

Places to Holiday in Umbria

Perugia, the capital, is home to Italy’s largest fortress, the Rocca Paolina, built in 1540, and is the main metropolitan area of Umbria. The famous fortified hill towns like Montefalco, Citta di Castello, and Umbertide (where Hannibal first defeated the Roman Empire) are all defiantly worth a visit. With so many places worth seeing on an Umbria holiday, it is suggested that hiring a car is the best way to get around.

Festivals and carnivals are very popular in the area, and Spoleto hosts the famous Festivals of the Two Worlds, and Torgiano is a must for all wine connoisseurs.

Umbria, Italy has a Mediterranean climate, so benefits from long, dry, hot summers starting at the end of April, with average temperatures of 23°C. Winters are cold; but the Apennine Mountains prevent the worst rain reaching Umbria.

Perugia Airport (PEG) is serviced by many airlines, including AirLingus, Air France, Flybe and British Airways, and Ryanair provides direct flights. Last minute holidays in Umbria are easy to arrange independently, and an Umbrian villa is a perfect place for a relaxing weekend.
