The two self- catering apartments are in the old town of Cisternino. The 1st apartment has 2 bedrooms (one larger than the other) With stunning vaulted ceilings. A beautifully designed bathroom with shower, toilet and bidet. The kitchen is incorporated into the living room, there is a large sofa bed. The carefully designed roof terrace has a hot tub and tables. The 2nd apartment has a double bedroom with a large arched window, the designed bathroom has bath, bidet and sink. Living room has a lovely arched ceiling plus sofa-bed and kitchen area. Both apartments have large sunshades for the terrace which is shared between the two apartments. There is nothing better than sipping prosecco on the terrace, in the evening and experiencing the atmosphere of the delightful medieval town of Cisternino. The 'Centro Historico' is a car free, warren of small cobbled streets and alleyways, full of white houses, with cascading geraniums and bougainvillia.

A self contained unit. With one double bedroom and one single bedroom. The bathroom has toilet, bidet and shower. The living room is open plan with kitchen and has a large sofa bed. The terrace is shared with the other apartment. There is a hot tub and tables carefully designed and incorporated into the terrace Plus a large sun shade. I would recommend this apartment for 4 people max and not suitable for children under the age of 8 years as the terrace is not fenced.

The apartments are situated in the historical centre of Cisternino,Puglia, one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy. Located in the 'Valle D' Itria' only a few kilometers from the beaches of the Adriactic and many surrounding tourist attractions and important historical sites : the grottoes of Catellaanna, the ancient town of Egnazia, the stunning baroqueness of Lecce, the Trulli's of Alberobello, Ostuni appley called the white city, the wilderness sanctury of Torre Guaceto, the safari park 'zoosafari' in Fasano, the potteries of Grottaglie and the cave houses of Matera. Further south, one has the wilderness of the penisular and stunning clear blue waters of the Mare Ionio and the port of Gallipoli. Puglian food in famous for being some of the best in Italy and there are resturants and cafes spilling out into the street in every village and town. Brindis is 45 mins by car and Bari is 60 mins in a car.

The apartments are not suitable for children under the age of 8 yrs due to the fact that the terrace and roof are not fenced and they are dangerous. The washing machine is on the terrace and therefore shared with the other apartment. There is a hot tub on the terracewhich is shared with the other apartment.

Both apartments are unfortunately NOT suitable for children under 8 years old, as the terrace and roofs are NOT encased. Smokers are welcome to smoke on the terrace. Animals are not welcome – sorry. Four of us stayed in Clara 1 in March 2008 - we loved it, though next time we come, we will rent both flats. The flat is medieval with a modern twist: beautifully and colourfully furnished with interesting pieces and pictures from around the world. The sun terrace is fabulous; although it wasn't warm enough in March to eat out in the evenings, it was great for star gazing and for lunch. The perfect situation would be for two couples to rent both apartments and share the terrace.
We had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and did most of our cooking there - Puglia is food heaven! There are many markets and great food shops in the area. One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to the olive oil co-operative in Ostuni (a car is essential).
Cisternino is a fascinating ancient town with a maze of traffic-free cobbled streets to get lost in; it was very quiet as we were ahead of the season and not all the cafes were open, or had tables outside, but this gave us a real feel for non-touristy life in Puglia.
We would highly recommend Clara 1 and intend to return as soon as possible with friends to sample more delights of Puglia.

Earlier reviews confirm our experience of Clara 1 - a wonderful surprise at the top of the steep steps. Wheelie luggage or rucksacks essential. We loved the cool, natural colours and overall feel of the apartment, - very tasteful - and especially the bathroom - brilliantly designed. It is necessary to go through the larger bedroom to reach the 'French' double, - bed linen in both excellent, towels plentiful and good. The roof terrace is delightful - we had it to ourselves - and the very large umbrella is helpful during the day. Two minutes for fresh bread in the morning,also worth finding the farm outlet for the best ricotta, and then each excursion was a discovery - so much to see in nearby towns, and we loved the endless olive groves, with strong red earth and wonderful shapes. Swam somewhere different almost every day. Cisternino is well placed for outings, but less touristy in itself than other towns., and the market is a real joy. We would love to go again, and the two apartments together would be excellent for up to six people. Probably best for adults who don't mind steep steps, are interested in getting around, and who appreciate a little gem to return to each evening.

Spring break in Puglia

I stayed with 2 friends in both Clara 1 & 2 for 2 weeks in May 2008. The two apartments are connected by the sun terrace though they have their own entrances and living areas. Both are very well found and comfortable and attractively furnished and decorated. They are two floors up in a quiet part of the old historic walled centre of the town, which is traffic free and so you are spared the pollution of both noise and petrol fumes! The roof/sun terrace proved ideal for leisurely breakfasts (fresh croissants purchased from a baker's about 4 doors away!), lunches and sunny siestas & also quiet evening drinks "at home" if we didn't fancy the short walk to one of the many excellent local restaurants or bars. May is a good month to go if you enjoy walking and exploring as the weather was pleasantly warm but not too hot, and ahead of the main tourist season so not overcrowded either. We found a myriad of tracks and paths through the villages and farms in the surrounding countryside which was gloriously full of colour as all the flowers and orchards were in full bloom, though we did find the local maps the town tourist office provided needed some rather creative interpretation! We had a hired car, which was invaluable as it meant we could take trips to the coast and visit some of the fascinating towns and cities nearby. It was the first experience of Puglia for all of us, but hopefully not the last!
I would highly recommend both apartments as a great place to spend a holiday that could be as relaxing or as energetic as you want it to be! I have added the 55+ age-group into the recommendation as we did all fall into this category but I would warn against it for anyone that has difficulty in climbing stairs or walking - active over 55s however, would have no problems - and there are plenty of those!

Clara Appartments - charming and chic

We booked both Clara 1 and Clara 2 - both appartments are connected by the sun terrace but have their own separate entrances. They are found in the beautiful historic centre of Cisternino which is truly a-mazing - literally, but it doesn't take long to find your way around. The appartments are in a quite part of the town but within 5 mins walking from the historic square and all the cafes, boutiques and shops.

Each appartment is beautifully furnished and both are very well appointed. Everything from the linen to the crockery and cutlery has been carefully chosen to provide a truly Puglian feel. The beds are very comfortable and the shower is nice and powerful. The architecture of the appartments is fascinating, starting with the external stairs to the vaulted ceilings, intricate chimney pots and even the 'jacuzzi' has been built to compliment the style of the building! The roof terrace is a sun trap with two built-in tables and benches for 'al-fresco' eating under the orange sun brollies. There are also a couple of in-built sun lounging areas either side of the jacuzzi complete with cushions for added comfort!

Luggage with wheels is a bonus as the historic centre is car free and you have to walk to the appartments. It is not far but easier if pulling you bag along rather than carrying it. The surrounding area is equally interesting, especially Grottaglie where they make all the local pottery. I would recommend hiring a car to get the most out of the area.

All in all we had a wonderful stay at the Clara Appartments and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone who wanted to visit the area. I think you would have to go a long way to find a more comfortable, well equipped and pretty place to stay. If you like charm and quirkiness then this is the place for you.

Simply Stunning

I have recently enjoyed a short stay in Cisternino in the charming appartment Clara 1. Thank goodness we were met and taken to the appartment on our first (of many, I hope) visits. The Centro Historico is a very beautiful maze of car-free narrow streets and lanes and I would challenge anyone not to get lost until at least day 2 of your stay! Note; wheeled/manageable luggage is a good idea.
I found the appartment in the best of condition, it is well-maintained and clean which instantly makes one feel welcome. The furnishings, furniture and every piece of crockery, cutlery (yes, even sharp kitchen knives!) and bed-linen is clearly very carefully chosen. The kitchen is well stocked with useful equipment which we certainly put to good use, Puglia's markets, shops and farms being full of the best fresh produce, wines and olive oils. Note; Cisternino market on a Monday and several small shops minutes walk from the appartment. This is the perfect area for a foodie holiday.
The bedrooms are delightful, vaulted ceilings, wooden shuttered windows, comfortable beds, fresh linen, and very quiet. You can be sure of a very restful time here. Again, the shower room is well-designed and comfortable with a good strong shower.
The real surprise is the sun-trap of a roof terrace with an outdoor tub and al fresco shower. It is also perfectly appointed to enjoy outdoor dining. Note; not suitable for young children.
I would recommend any visitors to Clara 1 hire a car during their stay as there are so many beautiful nearby towns to visit and of course the coast is 10 minutes drive. Alba Ciara, a tented beach-front fish restaurant in Torre Canna is a rough and ready treat! Seasonal fish, seafood and shellfish is served by the hardest working staff with little ceremony and nothing but bread and wine. You will not find a menu here. I recommend trying sea urchins, a local delicacy.
Every journey takes you past a new cheese farm, roadside market, or wine producer, you will always make new discoveries! And there are several local maserias which welcome non-residents for drinks, dinner or as guests in their spas. But watch out, they can be hugely expensive.
I would recommend a stay at Clara 1 in a heartbeat. A delightful property with a private sun-trap in a charming and friendly town not far from the coast surrounded by beautiful towns and stunning Puglian countryside. What's not to like?!
