Excellent Little Spot

Sun-Seeking Student Canterbury
Review Submitted: September 29, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
I rate this property very highly indeed. It was perfectly spacious, much more so than I had expected, with two big bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with two singles. In the double bedroom there is also a little balcony with catches the morning sun - perfect for breakfast! It was also excellently located, just a short walk from the Old Town with all it's restaurants and bars.

We were greeted by Nadia, the appartments owner, who was very friendly, and very patiently explained everything to us slowly so that we could understand. She was also kind enough to give us a bottle of wine when we arrived, which was very much appreciated! Inside the appartment was also a detailed sheet listing the best beaches, restaurants and other things to do in Alghero. It was very informative, and put to excellent use!

There were a couple of downsides, however. There was no shower curtain in the bathroom, which meant water sprayed everywhere and had to be mopped up each time, which was inconvenient. Also, despite having the facilities to cook, there was only one blunt bread knife for cutting anything, which was far from ideal. We had to actually go out and buy a sharp-ish knife from the supermarket! Still, these problems were only minor, and easily overcome.

In terms of restaurants, I can highly recommend Poco Loco on Via Gramsci, just up from Piazza Sulis. Pizza by the metre, and very well priced, and delicious! Pizza Aragon next door was also fantastic. Casablanca in the Old Town was very nice, as was Pizza Napoli in piazza Civica. All serve a variety of foods, not just pizza, including some great sea food. I would, however, advise people to be wary of cover charges and service put onto bills - this often makes meals much more expensive than one expects - but I guess is just the way the Italians do things. Again, not really a significant problem.

In terms of beaches, I would recommend either hiring a bike (or car) and cycling north, through Fertilia, and to the beaches of Bombarde and Lazzaretto, which are nicer than those around Alghero itself. It's not far, only about 8kms, and is virtually flat, with only a slight hill at the end. If you have a car, you must drive to La Pelosa on the northern tip of Sardinia. It's about 50kms from Alghero, about 40 minutes drive, busy, but absolutely worth it. Google it now. The sea really does look like that!

All in all we had a great holiday. Thank you Nadia and Gordon for their help. See you again soon!

Great Value Holiday

Carlibus Ireland
Review Submitted: November 17, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
This is a great place to stay in Alghero which is a wonderful atmospheric town with character. What is really great about the location is the convenience and proximity. It is five minutes walk from the old town, yet is away from the strip and in what I would call the real Alghero where locals come & go and you see realy Sardinian life & culture. And yet a mere couple of minutes from the action. Within 10 metres of the front door, you have an excellent pizzeria (4 or 5 Euros for a super pizza!), a bar cafe, ATM, and superb supermarket only 20 metres away which had literally everything - fresh fruit, meat & fish like you would never find anywhere. Some excellent restaurants are within 3 minutes - including the best value & service in town which is Maristella near Piazza Sulis. And a further 3 minutes on towards the old town you trip over fantastic value restaurants with dirt cheap prices. La Taverna Paradiso & La Vicere are both a must.

The apartment is clean & basic with all one needs. Kitchen ample, large bathroom and washing-machine which means you only need a small supply of clothes to avoid rip-off airline baggage charges. The only minor quibble is you are on a first floor with no lift, but even with 2 baby buggies we managed fine, and that was about the only downside I can think of. A tad noisy too at times, but hey, you are in a town so that comes with the turf.

I can't say enough for the caretaker upstairs, who was always at hand. We had 2 young kids and their daughter supplied them with toys and regularly invited them to play - which was a very welcome relief! Nothing was too much trouble, when the DVD was not working they replaced it with their own immediately, and they even posted back to Ireland a jacket which we left behind!
Would strongly recommend the airport collection service - which has no added charge to a regular taxi.

So I can't say enough about the apartment or the location. The only sour note on our holiday (nothing whatsoever to do with the apartment) was on our first day at a restaurant near the promenade and the old town wall. The waiter refused to heat our baby's bottle and shouted at me and threw me out - so please please do not go near PERBACCO. Fortunately this was our only bad experience, as everywhere & everyone else was incredibly nice and family friendly.

Finally, to the previous reviewer who complained about no kettle... Erm, don't mean to be smart but - did you never of boiling water in an open saucepan??

An affordable spot in Alghero

will2008 United Kingdom
Review Submitted: July 2, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
As the previous review if you ou are looking for good, basic, clean accomodation a short distance from the centre of the Old Town then this is it. We were also made to feel very welcome by the owner and the landlady and even had a bottle of wine given to us on arrival! The apartment was clean and all basic requirements for the stay were supplied. The landlady lives above the apartment and was on call if we needed anything during our stay. The apartment is very close to the supermarket and everywhere was easily walkable. The central location does come with the noise of town centre living but the proximity to shops, bars and restaurants was a real bonus.

We had a taxi organised for us from the airport but decided to hire a car to see the rest of the island. It was also very useful to get the beaches to even relatively close to the apartment in the June/July heat! We bought some beach chairs that we left in the apartment for the next visitors and there was sombreros/umbrellas there already which we took to the other beaches we visited which saved having to pay for them each day.

We would recommend this property to anyone thinking of staying in Alghero. There wasn't a kettle but by the end of the week we were addicted to expressos!

The only criticism was that the bath/shower did not have a shower curtain installed and not having to sit in the bath for a shower would have been a bonus.

We took the owners' offer up of a lift from the airport and decided to holiday without a car, as being centrally located we did not feel this would be necessary, and I have to say for a short stay there really is no need as there is plenty to see nearby.

I would recommend this property to anyone thinking of staying in Alghero. My only criticism (and it is a very small one) is that there was no kettle for a cuppa in the morning - so be prepared to take a travel one!
