Archaeological Roman site:
The tower was built on the foundations of a Roman building, of which the arch is still visible, near an ancient bridge on the River Sile. Strada Claudia Augusta, the road which linked the Roman town of Altino to Germany, passed over it. The plan of the road, which runs close to the tower, stretched across the entire length of the small area situated between the two rivers. A paleochristian sarcophagus was found beside the Sile. The balcony on the tower which juts out over the Sile is held up by two stone supports from a Roman mansion or palazzo in Altino. At a later stage, the tower became the customs house for the Republic of Venice. The story goes that Venetian gentlemen used to send their laundry to be washed in the waters of the Musestre, which were famous for their limpidity
