Abruzzo is the least populated region of Italy offering 129 km of beaches, wonderful mountains, including the highest peaks in Italy outside of the Alps, and rolling hills between the coast and the uplands. 30% of the region is national park and offers some of the most remote & beautiful scenery in southern Europe. The house is about half way between the sandy beaches, bars & restaurants of Pineto & Pescara and the Gran Sasso mountains and national park which offer sking, walking, climbing, horse or bike riding or just a great place to picnic. In spring the high plateaus are famous for acres of wild flowers and in autumn the huge beech forests are a profusion of colour. History buffs will find 80 castles, beautiful medieval villages & towns as well as Roman & pre-Roman remains. Fresh pasta & bread are made daily in the village and local farms offer cheese, olive oil, & meats. Our local winery is becoming internationally recognised yet still offers robust reds for about €1 a litre.

Fantastico!

Review Submitted: June 23, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
This is a fabulous place to stay .. one of the best we’ve found in 8 years of travelling to Italy.

The region of Abruzzo is wonderful with amazing scenery, loads of different places to visit from the remoteness of the Grand Saso mountains, rural towns, medieval towns & castles, busy shopping towns and the bustle of the Italian beaches. Something for everyone, and pretty much all within 1hrs drive… what more can you ask for?

We were here in June. The weather was perfect and we felt like we have the area to ourselves. Don’t expect loads or touristy stuff .. and make sure you have some basic Italian …. this is proper Italy .. just what we wanted!

Casa Cichella is a real gem of a property, definitely one of the best in the region. The stonework of the house is wonderful, the interior has been done beautifully and the outside space has been laid out perfectly sun terraces, shaded areas, olive grove, lawns and a gorgeous pool with views down the Fino valley and across to the neighbouring town.

The kitchen is the best we’ve ever had. If you like to do your own cooking this has everything you need from great workspace down to sharp knives. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into providing for guests every need. If you’re not a budding Antonio Carluccio then there are many places to eat & drink from the local town bar (stunning views from the piazza) to local restaurants & agroturismos. Good, typical Abbruzi food, everywhere.

Sharon & Steve are perfect hosts. They are there to welcome you, always there if you need them but giving you all the privacy you wish for. You’ll probably also get some visits from the ‘real owners’ … Whiskey & Soda, 2 “so cheeky they’re gorgeous” little dogs, just coming down to make sure you’re ok!

All of the info about the area is described in detail in their own guide at the house, the infamous ‘Blue Book’ .. this is a stunning piece of work … makes the Dorling & Kindersley books seem positively dull!

Steve & Sharon have really integrated into the local community, they know everything & everyone and therefore can make sure you get everything out of a holiday that you want. Having a holiday on a real working Olive farm makes you feel like you’re really becoming part of the real Italy as well.

We echo the sentiment of the other reviews for Casa Cichella .. in that we really shouldn’t be telling anyone how good this place is .. it should be kept a secret … reserved for just a few privileged lovers of ‘Real Italy’.

Great spot in Italy

Review Submitted: April 25, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
We are a family with two kids and we stayed for one week in Casa Cichella. The house is situated in a very traditional, authentic and quiet part of Italy. The house has an amazing garden with very old trees. We liked the view to Grand Sasso (mountains, that were covered by snow in April). Werner and Sylvia, two germans who care for the house, were very friendly and got us some information about the area. In addition you will find some more information in the house, since the owners wrote all the informaton in a book.
Thanks for a great holiday!

Unforgettable Holidays in a fantastic house!

Review Submitted: September 5, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
I must say, also on behalf of my wife and my three sons (14 and 12 years old), that we really fell in love with Casa Cichella, Montefino and Abruzzo in general, the two weeks we spent there (21.8. - 4.9.2010) were fantastic in all respects!! Hiking in the mountains was great, including Corno Grande (the highest montain there) from where we had a superb view, and Campo Imperatore, a high plaeau that you would not expect in Europe is most impressive! Abruzzo still represents more than other - maybe better known regions - the "real" Italy not affected by all the detrimental consequences mass tourism often has - simply because there is no mass tourism! We also enjoyed the food, the respective recommendations of the landlords listed in the "blue book" which you find in the house were very helpful and good, we tried e.g. the fresh "burrata" Mozzarella fresh from the farm, fresh pasta and ravioli from Maria, a local pasta maker and of course meat from a unique meat store very close to the house.

We really felt at home in Casa Cichella from the very first moment on. It is so relaxing there, be it in the "pavillon" (our sons called it "chill lounge"), in a deck chair under a tree in the garden, around the pool or - of course - in the pool. It couldn't be better and we shall definitely come back!!!

Review for Casa Cichella, Abruzzi farmhouse

Review Submitted: August 15, 2010 Date of Stay: June 2010
My family and I found Casa Cichella to provide the perfect break. The location is wonderful - so many areas to visit and explore; villages, markets, mountains and beautiful countryside at your doorstep. The villa itself was a joy to live in. The kitchen is very well appointed and we loved sourcing local ingredients and cooking Italian food. The garden and pool are fantastic and the views of the surrounding mountains just stunning. I cant fault the property or the location - the blue book in the house provided so much local information and gave us so many ideas about where to visit - we never ran out of inspiration and could easily have spent another 2 weeks there. We would recommend this villa to any family group or couple wanting an mixture of relaxation and exploration.

great family holidays in the midst of Abruzzo

Review Submitted: July 28, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2010
These were our first family holidays in a rented house abroad - and, quite frankly, it's hard to imagine how to top our experience in the future. The stone house offers nice temperature even if in the outside it gets up to 40C degrees; it is very nicely equipped (especially the kitchen), everything worked fine (except for the satellite TV - which due to the world championship finals happening during our stay made us to enjoy the games together with the locals in the close-by bar(s) in Montefino). We were there with our youngsters (1 and 3y old), later on my sister with her two boys (11 and 13y) joined. We enjoyed the pool (large enough to play waterball), self-made italian food (based on local ingredients of magnificent quality...you don't get such tomatoes anywhere else!) and the peace that Abruzzo offers. A special thanks to Marco and Hannah (the helping hands looking after the house, since Steve was not there during our stay) - whatever issue/question we had - it was solved immediately!!!
So, to make it short: If you want to get to know Italy from it's laid-back side: that's exactely the place to go! (Don't ask us about near-by beach qualit...we enjoyed the Case that much, that we did not even make it to the beach...).
