IL Giardino Segreto is an original centuries old farmhouse divided into three adjacent parts; La Casa Vecchia, La Casa Padronale (Main House) and the Cantina each with their own entrance, living rooms, bathrooms; alternatively the whole house can provide one large let for a large family or a group of 10-11 friends. Outside their is a small secluded south-facing garden. All the living areas are comfortably furnished with a strong homely feel to it. The house is situated in Tovena, an old mountain village which offers a quick gateway to the Dolomites to the north, easy motorway access to get to and from the airports and to see Venice, Treviso and Padua to the east, the Prosecco wine hills and its excellent wine growers to the west and the seaside to the south. Its hillside location ensures a degree of cool in the heat of summer. There is no TV but lots of books, magazines in several languages and board games.

The house is made up of three adjacent parts;the cantina at the end of the garden, the main house and La Casa Vecchia. La Casa Vecchia has been left in the old rustic style with a cosy sitting room with a farmhouse table and six chairs for relaxed breakfasts, a wood burning stove with oven, a pantry with fridge and microwave and a very basic kitchenette with a 3 ring stove. A wooden staircase leads to a spacious sunflower yellow bedroom with exposed chestnut beams and floor with three single beds of which two can convert into a large double and another good sized yellow double bedroom with a large double bed that can be turned into twin beds. Both rooms have wardrobes and bedside tables or cabinets. At the end of the landing there's a small shower-room with a toilet.

il Giardino Segreto is peacefully situated at the foot of the Passo San Boldo mountain pass in the small hamlet of Tovena, which has a village shop, post office and a friendly family -run Osteria. Several weekly markets, supermarkets, excellent restaurants and pizzerias within a 5 km radius. Tovena is on the Prosecco Wine Road characterised by excellent wine-growers set against a backdrop of spectacular mountain scenery. Nearby Venice (70km) and Treviso (50km) can easily and cheaply reached by train from Conegliano a 15 minute drive or directly by the Belluno-Venice motorway (12km from our house). Lago Morto and Lago di Santa Croce with spectacular views of the Dolomites are just 20 minutes away by car and excellent for bathing, windsurfing and following the nature trails around them.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Rent includes bed-, kitchen linen and towels, gas for cooking, water and electricity. Gas for central heating and hot water is metered and charged at cost (min 10- max.25 Euros per day). Logs for the stove and open fire can be bought directly from us at 5 Euros per box. Damage deposit of 100 Euros to be paid on arrival and returned at end of stay. Any extra cleaning or damages will be deducted from the damage deposit already paid.
    We ask for 25% of the rent as a non-refundable deposit at time of booking. The balance is be paid in cash (either Sterling or Euros) on arrival.
  • Home-made organic bread, biscuits, cakes, fruit conserves, marmalade, food hampers with a selection of good local wines and foods can be ordered with your booking.
  • Cars can be parked safely in the square opposite the house. Bikes, motorbikes or surf boards can be locked safely in the barn.

Notes: Safe parking is available in the square immediately opposite the house. Bikes, motor bikes or wind surf equipment can be safely locked in the barn overnight. The big green wooden gates at the beginning of the house provide a pleasant private sitting-out area and a safe and sheltered play space. There is no TV but there is a wide choice of books and magazines in various languages and many board games for a rainy day. Almost next door there's a friendly family run osteria where Antonio and his family await you with a superb cappuccino and brioche. There's a small village shop, and a post office. Many excellent restaurants within 5 km. We've compiled an information book containing recommended restaurants and other eateries, places of interest, local attractions, exhibitions or other not-to-be-missed cultural events, market days and detailed descriptions and maps of walks starting right outside the house.

Sports facilities near il Giardino Segreto.: In the village there is a riding school where courses or daily excursions can be arranged. From the house long peaceful mountain walks or mountain bike trips can be made. Maps and detailed information are available in the house. Bikes can be rented from a nearby village bike shop. Lago Morto (16km) and Lago di Santa Croce (30km) are two lakes ideal for wind surfing or canoeing otherwise follow the nature trail around them.

The owners of il Giardino Segreto.: Angelo, Janine and their young daughter Maddy, have lovingly and charmingly converted the old farmhouse, infusing their own personalities into the accommodation and enjoying the results of their labours, since they made the main house their own home until May last year when they moved and started renovating another house nearby. Although no longer living in the main house, Janine is always available to welcome you and to advice you on practicalities.

Languages spoken.: Janine speaks fluent English, Italian, Dutch and German.

Other Activities: ideal for painting and photography too.

A real find! We would never expect the green gates to be concealing such a gem of a house and garden. If you want up-to-date, immaculate accommodation, this place is not for you, but if you want comfort, history and character, there could be nowhere better. Janine, the owner is extremely friendly, providing plenty of helpful information about places to visit, good restaurants etc.The weather was very hot and after spending the day sight-seeing, swimming in the lake just 5 minutes away, or lazing in the lovely garden, the old house with its thick stone walls felt very cool and welcoming..There are good walks nearby, both hilly and flat, and although there are no restaurants within walking distance, the bar next door is good for lunch-time snacks, and we found good eating places just a short ride away.All in all, highly recommended.

We had a wonderful break at this beautiful farmhouse. The house is full of character and charm. We stayed in the main house and enjoyed
watching the birds in the garden while having our breakfast. It is a very
convenient location for trips out, wether catching a train from Canegliano to Venice or driving up into the mountains. Janines home made cookies were a real treat on arrival.

What can I say...the most idyllic, wonderful holiday experience you could hope for. The accommodation has everything you need, and if you can think of something that might be missing, Janine will have it at your door before you think to ask!! Tovena and the surrounding area is beautiful with so much to see; Vitoria, Follina, wine routes, its simply magical. Further afield, but by no means far are the Dolomites, Venice, Belluno and some lovely lakes to relax by in between. If you want to relax and unwind with wonderful hospitality then The Secret Garden is the place for you. Honestly I cannot speak highly enough of the house, the town, the people and the area. Safe, friendly and beautiful sums it up.
