Photos and Description of this Negrar holiday farmhouse 4 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 8

Perfect for a relaxing rural holiday, or as a base to explore the natural beauties and cultural riches of the Veneto. 'Il Castello' is situated on the spur of a vine-clad hill in Valpolicella, a famous wine-growing region of Italy, with dramatic views of the Po Plain and the magnificent outline of Monte Baldo. Our lovingly restored and attractively furnished stone farmhouse is only 20 minutes from Verona, one of Italy's most beautiful cities, with its famous open-air opera, and about 40 minutes from the beaches and spectacular scenery of Lake Garda. It also offers ready access to the mountains and to the many historic and beautiful cities of the Po Plain (Venice, Mantua, Vicenza, Ferrara, Padua etc). Opening onto a peaceful courtyard, the house has a large living/dining room, a well-equipped kitchen (with dishwasher), four double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry room with washing machine and third WC. A wisteria-covered pergola provides a wonderful eating-out and sitting area.

Il Castello is peacefully situated, about 2 kilometres above the small town of Negrar, which has excellent specialist food shops (butcher, greengrocer, baker etc.), a weekly market, and a large supermarket close by. There are lots of good restaurants and pizzerias in the area. Negrar is the centre of the famous Valpolicella wine-growing region, characterised by excellent wineries and romantic medieval churches, set against a backdrop of spectacular mountain scenery. Verona (about 20 minutes away), built on the banks of the River Adige, is one of Italy's most beautiful and civilised cities, with its Roman bridge and amphitheatre, medieval castle, a host of wonderful churches, and stylish bars, restaurants and shops. Our house is perfectly located for access to Verona, Lake Garda, and the many cultural delights of the Veneto, but its hillside location ensures tranquillity and a degree of cool in the heat of summer.

Further details for this holiday farmhouse rental in Negrar, Italy

Il Castello: Our property is part of a large farmhouse complex built around a shared courtyard. The main farmhouse, on the other side of the courtyard, is divided into three units occupied by permanent Italian residents, including my brother-in-law, Hugh Ward-Perkins and his Italian wife, Paola, who are both bilingual, and are always very ready to help with problems and queries.

The accommodation: The accommodation is in two parts, either side of the entrance portico into the courtyard. The main part includes the large downstairs sitting/dining-room, and the attractive and well-appointed kitchen; upstairs is the main double bedroom, a bathroom tiled in local pink marble, and a second smaller bedroom with two beds. The other part of the accommodation, the ‘Fienile’, is a converted hayloft. Upstairs, reached by an external staircase, is a double bedroom with spectacular views across the valley, and an attached shower-room with WC. Downstairs is another double bedroom/playroom, with double doors opening onto the courtyard. Next to it is a laundry-room, with a washing machine, large sink and WC. It is possible for those staying in the Fienile to be reasonably autonomous, which makes it well-suited to having family/friends to stay. The division of the house also makes it pleasant to use in smaller numbers.

Outside Areas: There are two sitting-out areas with shade - one under a portico on the courtyard side; the other under a pergola planted with wisteria, oleanders and a fig tree on the valley side. The courtyard is shared with the other owners, and provides a pleasant sitting-out area and a safe and sheltered play space, with an olive tree, fig tree, and large stone basins filled with running water from a stream which runs underneath. There are chairs and a table for eating out on the terrace, as well as deck-chairs.

Other Activities: Verona Open-air Opera Festival in the Arena, the Roman Amphitheatre. Wine-tasting. Gastronomy. Art and Architecture. Gardaland Water Park.

We had a FANTASTIC time at your house and it was perfect for our needs. The wisteria covered patio was superb for sitting, talking, eating and drinking, laughing. Very much enjoyed Negrar, so non touristy. Christine Leith, June 2004.
Just a note to say what a great holiday Jane and I had at Il Castello. It was just as we remembered it, the 'vendemmia' was in full swing...Thanks for providing the perfect location. Nick Hickman, September 2004.
I just want to let you know about the lovely time we had at Il Castello. The place was perfect, the views were stunning...Your brother-in-law Hugh could not have been nicer or more helpful - from directions to restaurant recommendations to Francesca's wine. Janice Owens, Jan 2005.
We had a really wonderful time in the area and found the house perfectly equipped for all our needs. I was dying to tell your next guests about Enoteca in Negrar. What a place! The food, the wine ,the setting all superb. Elaine Davies, July 2005.

Wonderful stay in Valpollicella

Austintravelgirl Austin, Texas/USA
Review Submitted: October 26, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Our group of 5 women stayed a week at Il Castello, and found everything as wonderful as it appears in the listing. We took both the house and the fenile, and found everything to be clean and in working order. The owner, Kate, has a brother-in-law, Hugh, who lives in one of the other homes in the structure, and he and his wife Paola were helpful and responsive to our needs when we had questions or couldn't work the light switches (for the cylindrical ones, turn for dimmer and press for on/off - for the most part). The house has a rustic feel but is well-equipped and comfortable. We enjoyed many dinners at the big wooden table, with the fire crackling. The shared courtyard is charming, and the pergola has stunning views. The house has functioning shutters which help keep the heat in at night; although we had some chilly days during our Autumn stay, we were cosy inside Il Castello.

The house book recommends a gentleman named Mario for tours of wineries; do not hesitate! Call him early in your visit for many helpful tips and a terrific tour. He is worth every penny, and as charming and personable as the day is long.

We had lovely walks in the hills around the house, all ripe olives and grapes in the midst of harvest. The Monday morning street market in Negrar was one of the best we found during our trip. Negrar is a fine little burg, with a good supermarket and plenty of specialist shops.

We had terrific side trips to Verona, Sirmione on Lake Garda, and to Ponte Veia, a natural bridge north of the house. On the way is a cheese shop - Mario told us about it and that's another thing we wished we had done earlier in our trip. The cheeses and salami there were amazing, and we wish we could have brought them back to the house to feast upon them all week.

A tip for US drivers attempting to find Negrar: follow Kate's instructions until you are on the SS12 following signs to Valpolicella. Then put the instructions down and follow the blue directional signs to Negrar - it is quite well-marked. When you come to the roundabout with a giant sundial in the center, you are in Negrar. Go straight through town and turn right just past the Osteria Vecchia restaurant; go back on Kate's directions starting with the recycling bins.

You can get a lovely meal at Osteria Vecchia, too.

I highly recommend this property for a wonderful wine country stay. We had a terrific time here.

Thanks to Kate, and to Hugh and Paola at Il Castello. And Mario!

A godd time was had by all

Review Submitted: July 12, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
The pergola was a beautiful place to start and end each day. We took a winery tour with Mario, a local gentleman recommended by a previous guest in the black guest book and it was the highlight of our trip! I would recommend him to anyone. He even dropped us at the local restaurant afterwards and then returned to drive us home after dinner. Hugh and Paola, the owners, in- laws, that live next door, were extremely helpful. There is a black guest book in the villa that has a lot of useful information that I recommend you read upon arrival. We did no discover it until the end of the second day and it would have been nice if we had known about it sooner. There was a fabulous restaurant La Vigne, we found recommended in the book. It was wonderful. We ate there 3 nights. The villa was well located for seeing several great cities that week. In addition to our winery tours, we went to Verona, Venice, Florence, two cities on Lake Garda and Padua. A full week, yet plenty of time for relaxing, shopping and sampling the local wine. We had a car, but used the train to get to Florence and Venice (should have driven to Venice). The train station in Verona is not so easy to get to so I recommend a car if you want to tour other cities and not just hang out at the villa. We found the description of the villa to be very accurate and the pictures very true to what we found. The place was clean and well maintained. There is an iron and ironing board that is not listed in the information. Have a great time!!!

Relaxing in Negrar

Cenzo Chicago, IL, USA
Review Submitted: June 5, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Three of us spent one week (the hottest May in memory) and found the hillside setting and the farm house itself most relaxing and beautiful. Our hosts on the property were of great help with figuring out the little things about an unknown home. There are many wonderful wineries and eateries in the area and I would particularly recommend the Vogadori winery which is just down the hill as well as the Osteria Vecchia at the bottom of the road -- which has good osteria cooking and amazingly reasonable prices. The only advice I have is to bring plenty of reading matter as one really is "away from it all."
