Enjoy your holiday in a 19th century villa and its shady private park

The villa is our family country house (www.casinosansonetti.it) which was originally built in 1848 to serve as a 'palamento' for making wine but it was soon converted into a comfortable villa to become the family's summer residence. The vineyards around it were converted into a park of about 2 hectares. Oak trees, pines, cypress, strawberry trees and other Mediterranean species grow in it making it a very special green spot. There is also a pinewood on one side and a tennis court on the other. The house is made of the typical Apulian tufa stone. It consists of a ground floor, first floor and second floor. It has thick walls and high vaulted ceilings which make it naturally cool in summer. All rooms are very spacious and bright. On the ground floor there is also a small chapel which used to be the place where people would gather for mass on Sundays and other religious feasts. The house overlooks the road to Mottola on one side and the park on the other three sides

Casino Sansonetti is located in a hilly area, 2km from Mottola, a small town on top of a hill before the road descends towards the Gulf of Taranto. The area has been declared a natural and archaeological park due to the many rupestrian Bizantine settlements with caves where frescoes can be admired particularly those of the rocky churches (one of them being called the Sistine Chapel of he rocky culture). It is also possible to visit the Castellana caves with their beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. The countryside is famous for its 'trulli', the houses with cone-shaped roofs and going towards the Ionian sea you reach the ruins of the ancient Greek settlement of Metaponto. Sandy beaches on the Ionio are at around 15km from the house while the Adriatic seaside is at about 40km. Daily excursions can be made to Alberobello (UNESCO site for its trulli), Martina Franca, Noci, Ostuni, Taranto, Bari, Matera, Trani and many other locations still within easy travel for a day out.

Additional information about rental rates

  • RENTAL RATES REFER TO THE WHOLE PROPERTY. For groups of up to 10 pax it is possible to rent ground floor and first floor only (second floor will be closed) and the rental fee will be reduced by 30%. Rates include costs of gas, electricity, water, linen and towels for the first week and local arrangements for meeting you and introduce you to the villa's facilities. For stays of more than one week €10,00/bed is charged for bed and bath linen change. Final cleaning and dry-cleaning is to be added in the amount of €200,00 or €150,00 according to occupancy. An additional charge for heating, when required, is calculated by metre usage. A deposit corresponding to 30% of the total rent is required at the time of confirmation of booking; the balance is to be paid four weeks before arrival. A refundable security deposit of €200,00 to cover losses or damages caused by guests, should be handed over in cash upon arrival.

Notes: The kitchen is a large room which has a table that can accommodate 10/12 people. The gas cooker and the dishwasher are brand new (purchased in may 2008). The dining room can accommodate 16 people and next to it there is another room 'il Tinello' with a table accommodating 6/8 people. In addition to the living room on the first floor, there is a small studio on the first floor furnished with a desk and a sitting corner, a TV room on the ground floor as well as two other common areas with armchairs and tables for leisure time. A small Chapel is also located on the ground floor. Access to wheelchairs is limited to the ground floor. Maid service can be arranged on request.

How to get to Casa Elisa: By car through the highway Napoli-Bari-Taranto or Bologna-Bari-Taranto exit 'Mottola Castellaneta'.

By plane with Ryanair's low-cost flights or any other flight to Palese international airport (Bari).

Sea resorts: West of the Gulf of Taranto there are sandy beaches stretching for about 100 kilometres up to Metaponto. The nearest beach is Chiatona (15km away) but less crowded are beaches between Chiatona and Castellaneta Marina. South of Taranto the coast is more rocky but still with small sandy coves. Sea resorts on the Adriatic sea are also very impressive and can be reached in about 40 minutes by car driving through the very pleasant country side of this corner of Apulia towards Ostuni, Torre Canne, etc

Mottola: Mottola is the nearest town built on a hill (about 400 m above sea level). It has a beautiful belvedere over the Gulf ot Taranto on the left and the Calabrian coast far on its right. The old part of the town called Schiavonia, with its very narrow streets and white houses is very characteristic and has an Arab flavour. Many cultural and gastronomic events are organized throughout the year. You can eat the typical Apulian cuisine at very reasonable prices.

The climate is temperate. From January to April it can be cold but sunny, then the weather becomes mild and pleasant. In July and August it is warm, but at night it cools down and often a sweater is needed when going out in the evening even in the middle of summer.

Golf:

Of the five major golf clubs existing in Puglia, the nearest are Riva dei Tessali and Metaponto Golf Club at less than 30 minutes' drive from Casa Elisa (one of these two golf courses is an 18-hole championship course) as well as the Barialto Golf Course (30-40 minutes' by car) renowned for its course winding through palm trees, olive groves and five lakes. A must for any golfer visiting Puglia. On the Adriatic coast, one hour away by car, there is the Gof Club San Domenico located between the fishing village of Savelletri and Egnatia.

Casa Elisa

Our party of 10 spent a very enjoyable week at Casa Elisa in the summer. We particularly liked the tennis court complete with spectators benches and the fact that the house is clearly a family home. The surrounding area is very untouristy which was also a benefit.
