About this part of Italy:
In this part of Italy the Siesta is religiously adhered to. Most shops, offices etc are open from 8.30 – 1.00 and 4.30 to 7.30 or later. Lunch is generally from 1 – 1.30 and on Sundays and holidays extends for 3 hours or more. Dinner is generally from 9.00pm and restaurants will be deserted if you arrive earlier! There is little in the way of fast food other than Pizza and Foccacia. The nearest McDonalds is about 50km away.
Pezze di Greco is a typical Pugliese village with a variety of shops, bars, restaurants etc. Locals tend to buy fresh produce daily from butchers, bakers, fish mongers etc., and there are at least two of each in the as well as two banks. At certain times of day, the men congregate around the small squares and bars while the women are at home preparing lunch or dinner.
Shopping n stuff:
Most grocers and butchers stock local wines and will recommend their favourites to you. If you know a bit of Italian they will also advise on cooking methods and what to drink with what you want to eat. There are a few supermarkets nearby for those of you who prefer shopping this way. We did this until we got to grips with the language.. Grocers here stock a range of fresh produce including ham, salami, cheeses, bread etc. Normally they can also supply you with a panino (type of filled baguette) if you want a snack on the go.
All the local towns have markets which run on a specific day each week - with the exception of Torre Canne the markets are from 8am till 12 or 1. Torre Canne is from 4pm till people stop shopping which in the height of the summer can be later than midnight.
Ostuni provides a range of gift and souvenir shops with more tasteful products. Torre Canne has everything you may need for the beach.
