Old trulli stone villa, one of only three houses in the contrada, deep in the Puglian countryside. Set in the beautiful Valley d'Itria it has five double bedrooms handmade super king size mattresses , 3 modern bathrooms (2 with bidet), new kitchen set in local stone, stone flooring and towering conical ceilings crossed by old wooden beams. Handmade wooden doors to each room. Modern white goods, new windows with integral mosquito nets. The house has its own cistern (well) under the house, forno for cooking outdoors (pizza and foccacia), 15m x 5m pool (with deep end) and jumping board, pool toys, outside seating for 14 on terrace with pergola. Seating area around the pool with large umbrella. The kitchen is completely equipped for cooks, including cookery books in English. Sit under the ancient olive trees or pick your own figs whilst watching the sun set over the valley with a glass of local Primitivo wine. Stock of books, DVDs, guide books and games.

Contrada Fantese is an old masseria (old farmhouse), consisting of only three homes. Our neighbours are locals who farm the land and mend the surrounding trulli. It lies in the middle of the valley d'Itria, surrounded by fields and there are superb views of Locorontondo and Cisternino from the garden. The area is close to all the famous towns of the area, Martina Franca, Alberobello, Ostuni and Ceglie Messapica (renown for its restaurants). The sea is about 20 minutes drive away with beautiful sandy beaches. The area is full of wild flowers, olive, fig, walnut and almond trees and local vineyards.

  • Each bathroom is newly installed with top of the range Italian furniture. Bathroom 2 has a handmade round basin. All the bathrooms have stone floors and alcoves/natural shelving.

  • Beds 1 and 2 are built on a traditional threshing floor. All the beds have local bespoke handmade mattresses. Bed 5 is again handmade and entirely circular with a 210 centimetres diameter. Bed 5 is reached from outside the property as trulli have outside steps to the roof. All bedrooms have either side tables with reading lamps or stone alcoves. Each bedroom has a stone floor and bespoke windows with integral mosquito nets and shutter. All the doors are handmade wooden with traditional locks. There are wool blankets, eiderdowns and 2 pillows for each person. Every bedroom has a conical trullo ceiling. There are hanging alcoves/chains to hand clothes and chest of drawers. There are mosquito 'zappers' provided in each bedroom. Bedrooms 1 and 4 have en suite bathrooms.

We were a party of six adults and had more than enough room in the villa. The pool, terrace and outdoor eating areas were also good sized and well maintained. The nearby towns and villages offer a good range of restaurants and amenities. The location of the villa is quiet so the holiday catered for those who wanted to eat out and visit the quaint villages as well as those who wanted peace and quiet. We all had a brilliant holiday and would certainly stay again.

Peace and Tranquility in Beautiful Pugliese Trulli

We have had the most wonderful stay in this beautiful trulli in Puglia. Days spent lounging by the deliciously cool pool, the hot blue sky broken only by the outline of olive and fig trees. Local markets provide you with wonderful fresh fruit, and all you need for cooking simple, Italian country fare... (I highly recommend travelling with a copy of Jamie's [Oliver] Italy for inspiration). DO NOT MISS making and baking your own pizzas. You will find a recipe for pizza dough in Jamie's Italy, and baking it yourself in the traditional wood burning pizza oven at the house results in one of the most satisfying meals imagineable. Staying in a trulli puts you in touch with life as it used to be - the wonderful white stone walls inside, and lying in a bed at night looking up at the high, conical ceiling. There is plenty to see in surrounding Pugliese villages, but if you are here in the height of the summer I can think of no better way to pass your day than by swimming, sunbathing, drinking and eating! We have had a fabulous time, are very much looking forward to coming back soon, and would not hesitate to recommend this amazing place to our friends. Thank you!

German-Irish-Dutch Party at Contrada Fantese

After our TomToms had got us quite lost we were picked up at Cisternino by our friendly neighbour Paolo. On a rather chilly night we arrived at Contrada Fantese and by the next morning the dehumidifiers and the central heating had done a great job. The beds are fantastic and it was lovely to wake up in the morning under the trullo ceiling. After a lovely though icy (mind it was still April!) swim we had yummy breakfasts on the beautiful sunny terrace with a brilliant view across the fields towards Cisternino and Martina Franca.
The house itself is beautiful and easily fitted our party of 2 families with 5 children (ages between 9 and 17). The kids loved clambering about the roof of the trullo and, of course, the pool.
Contrada Fantese is a good base for excursions to Ostuni, Alberobello, Lecce and the Adriatic coast.
This was the first time in the south of Italy for most of us and we found the local people very friendly and helpful. They even let me try my rusty Italian and didn't always answer back in German or English.
We would certainly like to come back!

Beautiful Puglia in a beautiful house

The house is situated very good near the cities of Cisternino and Martina Franca in a loverly landscape - very silent with a lot of plants and flowers.
The house itself is ideal for six persons and is very tasteful furnished. The equipment of the kitchen is brilliant!
We enjoyed out time very much - in and at the pool or sitting together for long evenings and Puglia red wine at the terasse.

This Truli house is as stunning as it looks in the photos. A really quirky but comfortable place to stay with the biggest beds you've ever seen. We were unlucky with the weather but still had a wonderful time - if you look hard enough you can find horse riding, go-karting etc and the pizza oven is great fun. It is a very quiet relaxed area.
