Great stay in Malta!

Nigel met us at the airport and drove us to the house to get settled. We loved the house--it was perfect for 2 parents and 2 pre-teen girls (11 and 12).
The house had everything we needed (except we couldn't find a hairdryer, but there might have been one if we'd looked harder), and it was so cozy and welcoming after a long day out exploring Malta.
It was certainly not equivalent to a 5 star hotel, but that's not what we wanted. We were close to the center of town with little markets and restaurants close by--close enough to send the kids for milk or a paper. The views of the Grand Harbor were excellent, and the bus station was close by, with buses only 58 cents a ride.
I imagine the house might be hot in the summer, but we went in mid December and were very comfortable, occasionally using the little heaters. The beds were very comfy and the water pressure was good--2 things we have had problems with in other cottages. The kitchen was well-equipped and Nigel even left us some sugar and tea bags and an electric kettle to get us started! Because of the steep, narrow stairs, older people or really young kids might not do so well here, and I would be scared to death to let a toddler on the spiral staircase to the rooftop porch.
Everything was perfectly clean when we arrived, and there was a washer available, but we never used it.
Activities:
Our favorite outing was going to Gozo, a little island, and seeing the Azure Window. The kids loved climbing over the rocks and exploring all the little craters and caves.
Just down the street from the house was The Malta Experience, a little theatre with a film about the history of Malta. "Learn about 5000 years of Malta's turbulent history in 45 minutes." It was well worth seeing.
We ditched the kids and went up the street for dinner one night at D'Office, a cozy, romantic, reasonably priced little restaurant where we ate for 30 Euros including appetizers and wine.
We walked to the waterfront cafes and ate fries and drank Cisk beer several nights, sitting by the harbor in coats and hats, listening to Christmas carols--what a treat!
Seeing St. Paul's Grotto was incredible and will hopefully help our daughters appreciate the readings at church on Sundays when they read The Acts of the Apostles!
I would certainly recommend this house to friends who are looking for an inexpensive place to stay that's not too fancy, but is clean, convenient, charming and comfortable!
