The 'Ria Formosa Park', a protected area, is recognized of World importance by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. It was established as a nature reserve in 1978 and designated a natural park in 1987. The 'Ria' is rich in wildlife and is home to many rare as well as some endangered species of migrating and nesting birds. Being therefore the perfect place for serious ornithologists or those who want to enjoy the fascinating array of many birds in their natural habitat, 2 nature trails have been created through the heartland to the resort of 'Quinta do Lago'. These nature trails allow small groups of visitors to explore the park on set paths which feature a bird observatory (where the S. Lorenzo course joins the Ria Formosa) and information posts highlighting the flora and fauna of the area.
