Things to do on holiday in Faro, Portugal

Scattered across the Faro, Algarve, region are a number of special historical monuments and ruins, from the 18th Century city gates of Faro to chilling Igreja do Carmo, a chapel decorated with the bones of over 1,200 monks. Many of the best museums, like the Municipal Archaeological Museum, are in the town of Faro itself, and are well worth visiting before heading out to any of the historical sites.

Of course, it would not be a true holiday to the Algarve without taking advantage of the beaches which have made this part of the world so famous. The beaches around Faro are no different. The beaches of the Faro region have all the water sports that have come to be expected from an Algarve beach resort too, so you will be spoilt for choice, with deep sea fishing, scuba diving, sailing and windsurfing facilities to name but a few.

Golfers will love staying in Faro accommodation too. The countryside is adorned with a range of golf courses, from the stunning seaside courses to the challengingly landscaped golf courses of the interior of the Algarve.

The Ria Formosa National Park is a beautiful place to spend a relaxing and inspiring afternoon. There are many delightful walks and bike rides to be taken around the lagoon at the centre of the park and through unspoilt countryside of the Faro region.

Places to holiday in Faro, Portugal

Faro is a glorious, thriving university town, with both strong Arab and Roman influences, and a number of important ruins from both eras adorning the city. The old part of the town is particularly attractive, still surrounded by Roman walls. The golden church of Nossa Senhora is the finest example of gold leaf architecture in southern Portugal, and is well worth visiting from any accommodation in the Faro region. Being the administrative capital, many of the finest restaurants have located here, and the nightlife is second to none in the region.

Just 7km from Faro is the beautiful village of Santa Barbara de Nexe, a charming village boasting some stunning landmarks. The 400 year old church in the centre of town is the village’s most famous sight with its large bell tower, visible for many miles. Estoi, on the other side of Faro, is a charming village, filled with hidden treasures. It was bought to fame due to its horse markets, but as people began to take Faro accommodation in Estoi for the market, they discovered that there was much more to the village, and it has been attracting more visitors every year.

With fine weather all year round, Faro, Algarve, is perfect to take a self catering holiday rental at any time. Golf holidays are very popular from October through until April, when daily temperatures average around 16°C, but the beaches attract the majority of holiday makers to Faro accommodation during July and August, when temperatures reach the mid 30’s (°C).

Cheap flights to Faro can easily be found but the cheapest routes are London or Manchester – Faro. Car hire is available from many outlets at the airport, and there are many transfer options, so you will be able to reach your accommodation in the Faro region with ease.
