Tres Mares is on a ridge with all-round views. The gardens cover an acre, high-walled, with two lawns and many established trees. The house is farmhouse-traditional, with wooden beams throughout. Off the impressive entrance hall, the Library/TV Room has a piano, Sky, VCR, and 4000 non-fiction books. The main Sitting Room has a TV and music centre. The Dining-Room is separate. The kitchen is fully-equipped, with breakfast table, plus utility rooms and staff WC. Two bedroom suites are on the first floor, four are in a ground-floor wing well separated from living rooms. All are furnished as bed-sitting rooms. Outside are covered terraces with many chairs and tables. The Pool Area is securely walled with complete privacy and includes a badminton/games court, kitchen (BBQ and cooker), bar, shower-room, covered seating in traditional tiling, umbrellas and loungers. The tiled pool is 12 X 6 X 3 m with heat-pump and diving-board, lights, and a useful internal ledge all-round.

Notes to the rental rates

• Rental rates are for up to 12 people, aged six and over at the time of booking. For 13 and 14 people £200 per week per capita extra. Under six year olds are not charged. Cots are £10.
  All laundry, gas, pool maintenance, maid service, is included. In May and June, September and October, electricity is charged at cost.

ON ARRIVAL

First a caution - Tres Mares sits on the top of a ridge and its architect designed it to follow the hillside contours. There are plenty of level areas but there are steps both inside and outside the house and people with serious walking difficulty will have some problems. From between stone pillars the driveway extends through tall shrubberies of oleanders - with old olive-trees and mimosas, fig-trees and almonds, and high hedges of myoporum and bright red cape honeysuckle behind - to a broad courtyard of cobbles.

AROUND THE HOUSE

There’s masses of parking whilst you get your bearings. First you see, embedded in the wall under the porch by the front door, a long section of eighteenth century wall-tiling from Coimbra. The house is quite large, about 550 sq metres on two floors (6000 sq ft), and inside the walled and gated surroundings are about 4000 sq metres (one acre) of gardens. There is also more land below the house, part of which has thousands of plants in a now-closed garden centre.

THE BEDROOMS

Sleeping accommodation consists of fourteen beds/double beds. Two double beds, eight single beds, two bunk beds. On the first floor there are two big double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, one with a dressing room, both generously furnished and with large private terraces and fantastic views. On the ground floor in a wing well separated from the 'public' rooms of the house and dispersed down a long corridor are the other four bedrooms and suites, all opening onto one of the lawns via terraces.
