With over 300 days of sunshine per year the Algarve has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. Extremely clear water, spectacular cliffs with hidden creeks, endless sand beaches, protected by dunes and a mild Atlantic breeze make this place so special. Today Portimão is a busy and modern tourist place with its famous beaches Praia da Rocha and Praia da Vau and an active nightlife. Just across the river the delightful small fishing village of Ferragudo offers a peaceful contrast,
Is a large town with good shopping centre and a busy port. One of the main attractions is the fishing quay within sight of the bridge. Right on the quay are two or three restaurants and their speciality is to serve sardines just landed off the boats and grilled barbecue style, with potatoes and salad and of course one of the selection of excellent Portuguese wines. Just great after a morning shopping.
After lunch you could take advantage of the close proximity of MONCHIQUE some 25kms away and visit one of the only two or three volcanic areas in Portugal. An idyllic place where pines, eucalyptus trees, wild rhododendrons and terraces of orange groves flourish.
At Caldas de Monchique set in a wooded valley a mineral spa has existed since Roman times. The waters have medicinal properties and the Thermal Hotel, which is part of the Spa building, attracts people suffering from internal problems.
