Holiday in Alvor, August 2008

We were 5 adults,3 daughters one with her partner and myself, their mum. We were advised by the owner to hire a car from Faro to Alvor and this was excellent advice. The firm they recommended was good and we really had our moneys worth, as it was a long walk on a hot day to Alvor or the beach.
The villa is in a lovely place set back from Alvor, out of the main tourist area by the beach. Its quiet and mainly portuguese on holiday. The pool wasn't right outside the house, but a short walk - 3 minutes away. The pool was clean and lovely and it had good child facilities, a poolside bar as well. You could easily stay all day - shade from trees. It was open from 9 in the morning till evening. There was a cafe opposite the villa, and the people were friendly and spoke good english.
Good local supermarket, e leclerc only 5 minutes away by car.
The villa was well equipped, and we had lots of space. There was always a balcony in the shade if you needed it. The 2 air conditioned bedrooms were great, and the 2 showers were well used. There was a 3rd small bedroom in the basement, we found it a bit dark, and moved a 3rd person into the upstairs bedroom.
The villa was clean when we arrived. The swimming pool wasn't visible and we had to hunt it out,and tennis costs £5 an hour. We needed better directions to supermarket/ pool, etc., things which are obvious if you live there but difficult if you've never visited before. Also, where do you put the rubbish, how do you post a postcard - took us most of the week to suss these out!
These problems were soon overcome and the advantages of the property were great. We loved the space and the peace. Also, it was a great base to explore the Algarve from, the roads wre good and most places were an easy drive away, and everywhere the portuguese were really friendly.
Food and drink wise, we'll remember fresh barbequed fish in Alvor, Green wine and freshly squeezed orange juice.
also long lunches on the balcony at the villa.
Trip wise, the best day we had was at Lagos, we had a 3 hour canoeing trip round the caves. It was really great , exciting but manageable for adults of all ages.we all enjoyed it, and we all really liked Lagos too.
