Although the beaches of the Estoril Coast are the main attraction, many visitors are pleasantly surprised to discover that they also have a UNESCO World Heritage Site virtually on their doorstep, in the form of the beautiful Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, home to 145 square kilometres of natural and historical sites.

Places to visit on holiday in Cascais Area, Portugal

Near the south-westerly tip of the Estoril Coast, Cascais is a former fishing village that has come to prominence as a popular holiday destination for both Portuguese and foreign visitors. The town has a number of small sandy beaches, two excellent museums and a historic centre with cobbled streets that makes for excellent exploring. Several championship-standard golf courses are within easy reach of the town, and the main bulk of the area’s holiday apartments and villas are near this attractive town.

Nearby Estoril is marketed as a high-class resort for jet-setters, and is home to the famous Casino Estoril. The town is also known primarily as the former home of the Portuguese Grand Prix, and contains a string of luxury holiday rental villas, many of which are close to both the beaches and the golf courses in the Cascais area..

Guincho is home to one of the most popular beaches in the region, with the weather and sea conditions near-perfect for a great range of water sports, including wind surfing, sailing and kite surfing. There are also a number of good value restaurants in the area, which is a more peaceful and quiet destination than its bigger neighbours.

The Cascais area experiences a Mediterranean climate, enjoying around 3000 hours of sunshine annually. Summers are warm and dry, with peak temperatures of around 28C in August and September. Spring and autumn are also extremely pleasant and excellent times to visit, especially if you are planning a golfing trip, as low rainfall combines with temperatures of 19C and above during this period.

The Estoril Coast is served by Lisbon Airport (LIS), with huge numbers of flights arriving on a daily basis from all around the world.
