Set in the beautiful, historic, and UNESCO protected mountain range of Sintra, Quinta Matalva is located in a small secluded valley with pine forest backdrops and views of the sea. Quinta Matalva comprises a traditional Portuguese main house and a separate barn. The main house has a wide terrace around the immaculate swimming pool - ideal for barbecues and drinks. Matalva barn also has a terrace (but no swimming pool). From both houses there are superb views of the historic botanic gardens of Monserrate, and terraces of orange, lemon and fig trees.     Matalva main house and barn are rented on a combined basis ONLY in August.
  • 2 large gas bottles and a supply of wood are provided for central heating in winter. Any gas or wood requirements above this will be charged to the tenants. Electricity costs for the weeks between November to April are not included in the above tariff- a meter reading will be used and charged accordingly.

We've rented a lot of houses and loved this one. The bedrooms were a lot bigger than descibed and could sleep quite a few people (especially if you're a family with small children who share a room).

The house a airy, light, well furnished, and comfortable. The kitchen was fairly modern and they had a large grill (we cooked for 10 at one shot).

Any problems and the owner was next door (we lost electricity and gas at one point).

The negatives: no phone or internet (if you view that as a negative) and you are 3k outside of town so you MUST have several cars to ferry people to and from dinner, shopping, etc - no walking to town.
