Photos and Description of this Mafra holiday farmhouse A 1900 farmhouse and annexes, restored, 3 bedroom, at 200 sqm private courtyard

The accommodation, at a half hour drive from Lisbon, is a restored farm ('quinta') in the village of Zambujal at one of the coastal hills south of sea-side town of Ericeira and between Carvoeira and Mafra, the district capital. The first picture, taken from the little square in front, shows from left on: the wine house and behind the gate, the former cow's house, the two storied main house (Casa Principal, sleeps 4 in two bedrooms) and, half-hidden by the yard wall, the former donkey house (Casa de Burro, sleeps 2). The 200 sqm yard includes a garden with grapes, roses and herbs and another part paved with Portuguese cobbles. The place offers privacy. You enjoy the quietude of a rural village having your breakfast outside in the sun while a flock of sheep passes along to daytime pasture. It serves perfectly as a base for exploring Lisbon, sunbathing at the nearby beaches or visit surronding historical towns, as well as for a surf holiday or trips to the golfcourses in the area.

Zambujal lies at the secondary road N549 between Carvoeira and the old town of Mafra, 6 km inland. Numerous hiking tracks offer the possibility to explore the coastal landscape on foot. Excellent motorways and country roads further connects Mafra to Lisbon-centre; by car in half an hour, by bus (every 50 minutes) in less than an hour. In Mafra-Gare (14 km) you park the car at the old beautiful railway-station and take the train to Lisbon centre or to the north in direction to Caldas de Rainha. The Lizandro and Sao Juliao beaches (surf-schools) are 3-5 km away. Ericeira (beaches, fish restaurants) is at 5 km. The Sintra area (25 km to the south) is a world heritage site within a micro-climate zone with a famous Moor's castle build on top of an old volcanic rock formation. Here and further south you find 18-holes golfcourses and the more fashionable Estoril-Cascais beaches (35 km). To the north lies the centuries-old village of Obidos (50 km, as well a world heritage site worth visiting.

    (-) By renting the property two successive weeks or more, the rate for the 2nd and following weeks will be less € 50,-

    (-) A 'last minute' booking (less than 2 weeks before arrival) as well as an 'early' booking (more than 6 months before arrival) gives a 10 % reduction of the total rental sum.

Notes: Along the Atlantic coast near Lisbon, 2500 km southward London or Frankfurt, prevails a pleasant warm marine climate with temperatures around 25 degrees from late spring to early autumn. Through the rest of the year the climate is mild with still a lot of sun hours. Have breakfast, lunch or dinner outside. Garden furniture is available as well as large long armchairs with pillows. In the wine house you can find small parasols and light weight beach chairs for taking to the beach. At arrival you will check in with Donna Raquel. The house will, in general, only be available from 4 o' clock p.m. She will clean the house once a week and provides clean linen and towels weekly as well. At departure you check out with her, and again, in general, not after 10 o' clock a.m.

Reservation and Booking: After having agreed by telephone, e-mail or letter on the period of stay, number of guests and rental sum, you confirm the booking by a bank transfer of 25 % of the total rent to my account within 2 weeks, after which you get a receipt. Balance to be paid by bank transfer at least 3 weeks before arrival at Casa Zambujal. In case of a 'last minute ' booking, payment will be agreed otherwise.

Outdoor Activities : (-) Horseback-riding centre in Gorcinhos (3 km), fully equipped, with possibility of instruction and out-riding (-) Surf is practiced all year round at nearby beaches as São Julião, Lizandro and Ribeira d' Ilhas (worldcup-tournament) and trips could include the beaches Lourenço, Santa Cruz further north. In Ericeira you find a Billabong and other surf shops. (-) 9 superb 16 holes golf courses are concentrated in the region around Sintra and north of Estoril and Cascais. (-) South of Lisbon, at the other side of the river Tejo, along the Costa Azul, you can visit a number of national parks and nature reserves as Arrabida and the Estuário de Sado with dolphins, flamingos and characteristic vegetation and landscape.

This house was quite a find! The location is great, there are a range of beautiful beaches and towns nearby to visit, and the village of Zambujal is quiet and peaceful. We were very happy with the house, it was clean, very well-maintained and beautifully decorated. It has great facilities, lots of space and we had everything we needed and more - including a fantastically well-equipped kitchen. The house has style and character and is so comfortable - a real home from home. We loved the house, we loved the area, we had a fantastic week there - definitely recommended!
