Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Azoia, Portugal

Local Information: The village of Azoia, although mainly peasant populated, contains 4 restaurants, a café/bar in a converted windmill overlooking the Atlantic and another bar in an old water mill, 2 cafés, a simple general store, an artist's studio and a tennis court for hire. There are wonderful walks along the cliffs and among the wooded, boulder-strewn Sintra hills, and ruined castles, monasteries and quaint villages to visit. For the less adventurous swimmer, there are many excellent, protected beaches facing south along the Estoril Coast.

Entertainment: Sunday markets are a feature of the area. Europe's premier wind surfing beach is just 5 kms away. One can gamble at Estoril's casino, shop at Cascais' ultra-modern mall and see English language films in its multi-screen cinema.

Golf: Azoia village is ideally located for all the many Lisbon area golf courses. The nearest (15 minutes) is superb Penha Longa, venue of the Portuguese Open and previously hunting lodge of the Portuguese kings. Nearby are the practice and teaching facilities of the Academia Internacional de Golfe and Quinta da Beloura Golfe. Within 30 to 40 minutes are the famous Estoril Golf Club, the Lisbon Sports Club and adjacent Clube de Campo, Quinta da Marinha on the coast road near Cascais and, over the Tagus 90 minutes drive away 3 further courses. Best of all is the links course at Praia del Rei, 60 kms north along the coast near the medieval walled town of Obidos. Visitors are welcome, green fees reasonable and the courses uncrowded, a treat compared with golf on the Algarve.

Other Activities: We have our own small Art School in the village. Our day classes are suited to all abilities - 3xper Week 10.00 - 13.00

my sister, friend and I spent seven days exploring portugal from our home base at Casa Saracena. I wouldn't have wanted any other way to have spent a week in Portugal. We wanted a very casual and relaxing experience. Day trips from Azoia were easy to see Sintra, Cachcais, Fatima and Obidos. Weary from our travels it was a pleasure to sit on the high terrace of Casa S with our local wine and ocean views and walk a short distance to the local restaurants. A highlight of our trip were the painting lessons Tom gave us in his charming studio.....he has immense talent.

Take your stilettos off and throw away your blackberry and enjoy.

Casa Sarracena, Azoia

Review Submitted: October 17, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
We very much enjoyed staying in a typical Portuguese village. The house was certainly not lacking in character but perhaps needs just a little more loving care (and more modern electrics!). The owner is an artist living locally; his house and studio are in a lovely spot in the village, with a fantastic view. We liked the fact that the local old wash-house is a focal point of the village, with different traders each day.
In Almocageme we discovered the "chicken-lady", who sells cooked chicken for lunch, with crisps on the side - maybe not the healthiest of meals, but good and tasty. Nearby Plaia da Agraga reminded me of some of the better Cornish beaches, though the currents can make swimming dangerous.
Visiting Cabo da Roca is a must, however tourist-ridden it is! On the way is a track marked "Ursa", something that we didn't spot until the last (wet) day. We think that this is a track to the local beach, which we previously had failed to find!
Off the main road near to Azoia, following the sign to Penhinas, we drove then walked through the forest, which in places is scattered with enormous boulders, and the view from the top is spectacular.
We also especially enjoyed a visit to Palacio da Pena, described in the Rough Guide as a "compelling riot of kitsch", and indeed great fun.
Despite the heavy rain at the end of the week, which seeped into the house, it was a good holiday, and we felt that we'd seen a corner of the real Portugal.

The taste of Portugal

Ocean Runner Cape Town, Western Province, South Africa
Review Submitted: October 17, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2007
To really experience Portugal you need to look for tradition and nothing better then a traditional village house on the Lisbon Coast in a little village called Azoia. Surrounded by magnificent Portuguese architecture and a lifestyle that will soon become an unforgettable experience. The village house made me feel right at home but more so the unique welcome expressed in such a sincere way from the owners which made me love the place even more. Great restaurants just a walking distance away from your home with excellent food, red wine and unforgettable Portuguese port. Cafes just around the corner for a bit of shopping, coffee or maybe just a nice realizing Super Bock beer. Take a nice walk to the beach and enjoy the incredible scenery and after a day of exploring enjoy a barbecue on the terrace facing the ocean in the distance. Enjoy a peaceful sleep and a blissful awakening with breakfast on the balcony and another day of venturing. There are really so much activities in surrounding area's so take the time to go out and really explore returning to your home far away from home.

Casa Sarracena

Bethesda Bethesda, Maryland/USA
Review Submitted: October 17, 2008 Date of Stay: December 2007
We arrived at Casa Sarracena and were greeted by a beautiful house located in a charming town on Portugal's coast. This was our 3rd trip to Portugal but our first time renting a home to stay in. From the starter breakfast in the fridge to the stunning views from the terraces every day was wonderful. Azoia is the perfect location to explore Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Estoril and the historic towns of Obidos, Fatima, Nazare, Tomar and Coimbra and still return in time to enjoy some of the wonderful restaurants located in town, every one a short walk from the house. We were glad that most understood our english and we equally glad that they appreciated our attempts at Portuguese. Almost every evening we would return and sit on the terraces, sip a glass of wine and gaze at the clear skies of Portugal's coast. We went with another couple and they were equally pleased with our experience. Casa Sarracena is perfect for two couples who want to relax and enjoy all that Portugal has to offer.

Not really the best....

Review Submitted: October 16, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
First view was quite nice, but absolutely crammed and packed with useless - not even - beautiful decorations. The kitchen equipment was really antiquated and grubby. The lower bathrooms needs urgent renovation.
Nice terraces with good views. The village is okay, not spectacular. With a car it is a really central point to stay and visit all the very nice surroundings. Before the owner will not invest some money to renovate we can not recommend this house except you would love to live on a flee market....
