An old, peasant house converted by a diplomat as his vacation retreat. Situated in a genuinely unspoilt farming village high up overlooking the Atlantic, well away from the tourist track. The road through the village leads to the Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point in mainland Europe. It is an area of castles, palaces, quaint old towns, high cliffs, sandy beaches and beautiful, hilly countryside.

Notes: The village of Azoia is located in the foothills of the Serra da Sintra about 1.5kms from the Atlantic. There are a number of excellent restaurants, 2 bars, one in a converted windmill, the other in an old water mill. 2 simple general stores provide basic provisions but in Cascais, 20 minutes away, are modern super-market and other facilities where all requirements can be met. The house is secure and secluded. There is ample parking through iron gates leading into a large, mature and well-stocked garden with croquet lawn, small swimming pool and shaded summer pergola with barbeque.

Transport: The village is connected by bus to Sintra and Cascais from where frequent and cheap train services run to Lisbon (30 minutes). Car hire may be obtained locally but it is normally cheaper to arrange this with the air fare. Hire cars are then collected and returned at Lisbon Airport.

Sports: There are many excellent golf courses within a convenient distance by road. Green fees are considerably less expensive and courses less crowded than on the Algarve. Visitors with club handicaps are welcome everywhere. The famous Guincho wind-surfing beach is 5kms drive away and several other sandy beaches are close by; those facing west are normally buffeted by large Atlantic waves, those on the south-facing Estoril coast are more suited to holiday bathers. A tennis court is available for hire in the village. Horse-riding, sailing and fishing can be undertaken in the area.

My wife and I have just had a very enjoyable stay in tha above property. Azoia is a lovely unspoilt village with a real portuguese feel.The property is well proportioned and positioned,if in need of a refurb,which can be seen from the photos. The owner is very helpfull if you need information,and the maid is very local.The bed was very comfortable,I really do not know what the bad back comments were about.

Position of cottage, garden and patio private and secluded but the general decor of cottage is in much need of refurbishment. The double bed was so uncomfortable. The property was clean but it desperately needs some of the rental money re investing on it.
Owner's Response: Actually,the double bed was bought(in Harrods,by the way)having in consideration the bad backs of both owners.We are now cured fortunately,and we hope Badback got better following the vacation.
As for the refurbishing,I try always to replace the wornout
fabrics and the out of order appliances.Bearing in mind the purpose the house was rebuilt for,a holiday cottage.
We went there this morning to check : it looked lovely.
