The most secluded and serene Cottage at the most Western Point of Europe. 'Abelhas' is situated in 5000sq meters of its own land, 1,5km from the village of Azoa (with its many restaurants and bars) and 400m from the Cabo da Roca Lighthouse (Continental Europe's most Occidental Point). Azoia is still an unspoiled village, sitting in the foothills of the Serra de Sintra. It offers a rare chance to sample Portuguese village life, well off the normal Tourist track but with unrivalled opportunities for walking, climbing, exploring places, churches and castles very close to the beautiful Surfing Beaches along our Coast.

Azoia, although containing a few imposing villas, is still very much a peasant farming village. There is one small general shop attached to one of the 3 Cafes, a Baker's van arrives every morning between 9.30-10.30. There are 5 superb Restaurants and a very romantic Windmill bar with superb views. Small Supermarkets are in close by Almocageme and Malveira da Serra. Hypermarkets are about 20 minutes drive away. The railway station at Cascais has trains every 15 minutes to Lisbon via Estoril, the journey taking about 30 minutes. Local buses run through the village between Cascais and Sintra. The beaches along the coast are large and sandy with splendid rollers for surfing. The nearest beach is Praia da Adraga which is about 7 minutes drive away. The famous beach at Guincho, 5km to the south of Cabo da Roca and 9 minutes from the house, is where the annual windsurfing championships are held. The closest beach is only 500meters away, but one needs sturdy shoes for the climb down.

Things to do: Wonderful walks are to be found in the wooded hills and along the Atlantic cliffs, this part of Portugal is a walkers an hikers Paradise. There are numerous places of interest to visit - the World Heritage town of Sintra with its 8th century Moorish castle, 14th Century Royal Palace and steep alleys. Colares, the centre of a famous wine-growing area, and the village above it, Penedo, are very quaint and close at hand. Lisbon, easily reached by train or motorway, is a most fascinating city not to be missed. Its 18th Century centre was built after the great earthquake of 1755. Take a tram from Cais do Sodré Station up the steep and narrow streets and visit the old Arab quarter, the Alfama. There are countless little restaurants in the Bairro Alto district and very reasonably priced. More up to date is the site of Expo 98 including its spectacular aquarium together with the night-life and restaurants along the old docks area leading to it.

Beaches: The Closest beach to 'Abelhas' is Praia da Ursa, it is only a short walk and a steep climb away... but it is hidden and exceptional. Other Beaches, Adraga, Guincho, Praia Grande, Ericeira, etc...are between 7 - 30 minutes by car.

Golf: There are numerous Golf Courses in this area: Penha Longa, Estoril, Quinta da Marinha, Oitavos and many more, all within a 20-40min drive away.

Ein traumhafter Platz!

Endlich hatten wir einmal Glück und die Beschreibung hat das gehalten, was sie versprochen hat. Das haben wir schon anders erlebt. Dieses Häuschen liegt wirklich wunderschön. Der Urlaub begann mit einer unglaublich netten Begrüßung durch den Vermieter. Wir kamen erst spät und ohne Proviant an. Doch der Vermieter hatte uns etwas Brot, Wurst, Käse, Obst und eine Flasche Wein bereitgestellt. Da wir im Dunkeln ankamen, war die Überraschung am nächsten Morgen groß. Wir machten die Fensterläden auf und staunten. Vom Bett, durch das Badezimmer-, Küchenfensterzimmer sowie vom Essplatz blickt man auf den Atlantik. Und man hat seine Ruhe! Kein weiteres Haus in der Nähe. Das macht es im Dunkeln und wenn es stürmt natürlich schaurig-schön. Das Haus fanden wir auch wie beschrieben vor. Die Einrichtung ist schlicht, aber ausreichend. Es gibt einen Gasherd und das nötigste Kochgeschirr. Traumhaft sind die Sitzplätze vor dem Haus. Ein überdachter Holztisch mit zwei Sitzbänken für ca. 6 Personen und ein schöner Kacheltisch mit Stühlen unter Weinranken. Es gibt eine tolle Grillmöglichkeit. Leider waren wir Ende Oktober da, so dass es zu früh dunkel und frisch wurde, um zu grillen. Als wir da waren, gab es zwei Liegestühle. Es war auch sauber (die Reinigungskraft kommt nach jeder Abreise). Bewusst sein muss sich über das französische Bett (eine 1.40m Matratze). Wir mussten uns daran erst etwas gewöhnen. Man sollte auf jeden Fall einen Mietwagen haben. Die Strecke in den Ort läuft man nicht ohne weiteres.
Die Umgebung um das Haus herum ist ein Traum. Man kann einfach loswandern. Ganz in der Nähe ist ein kleiner versteckter Traumstrand. Der Vermieter versorgt einen zu Reisebeginn übrigens mit einer kleinen Übersichtskarte über Cafe, Restaurants, Supermarkt usw. in der Nähe. Das Haus liegt auch ideal für Ausflüge nach Sintra (zurecht Weltkulturerbe - es gibt dort soviel zu sehen, dass man mehrere Tage einplanen muss), zu dem Kloster Mafra und natürlich nach Lissabon. Abends kann man dann wieder in der Ruhe im Häuschen entspannen. Wir waren von Portugal einfach begeistert und werden bestimmt noch einmal wiederkommen.
