Location: Ulgueira in Sintra area

Ulgueira, a genuinely unspoilt and charming village, is located above Cabo da Roca, overlooking the ocean, in an area where you can visit historical places, villages and towns, rich in works of art.

This property is in a unique and privileged position overlooking the Natural Park of Sintra with its countless paths and stunning views. From here you can walk to secluded sandy beaches, such as Praia da Ursa (8 min drive) and Praia da Adraga (5 min drive). Close by are Praia Grande, Praia das Macas and Guincho Beach, famous for wind and kite surfing.

There are several top golf courses near our area. Quinta da Marinha, Penha Longa or Oitavos Club,15 min.drive away.

The 10.000 sqm property is surrounded by an old stone wall which offers complete seclusion. It has large terraces, a BBQ, and a beautiful swimming pool.

A small typical Portuguese restaurant and small shops are at walking distance from the house. A 5 min drive will take you to some fantastic fish restaurants.

There are two living rooms, on the ground and lower ground floor, both have fireplaces (one has a wood burner.) The single bedroom has a slide out bed stored under main bed. As well as the bath and shower rooms there is a separate WC. This comfortable house has been recently renovated and newly furnished. Built-in kitchen with breakfast area. Main living areas and all bedrooms except one overlook sea, with French windows onto balconies or terraces. Wonderful walks directly from the house across protected countryside, with abundant wild-flowers, birds and butterflies, along the cliff-top or down to the beach. Beaches are mostly undeveloped and unspoilt, including one nearby accessible only on foot. Music and dance festivals during the summer, in Estoril and Sintra. Many local markets in the area, selling, among other things, wonderful Portuguese handicrafts. The atmosphere everywhere is relaxed, informal and friendly.

fantastic location

This is one more time we have spend a fantastic week at this property at Ulguerira which has an unbeatable location . Weather was great and we welcomed the odd day we had a few clouds to visit Sintra and the Monasterio de Mafra as well as other great places on the coast. The small details in the kitchen are now all fixed, Fridge/freezer are new , Tv and stereo DVD working well and satellite conection in good order. The views from the house are fantastic and we spend very relaxing times by the pool and wandering around the well mature garden . The small super and restaurant were closed for holidays but we found great places to eat fresh fish at Adraga Beach and at the nearby town of Azoia.
We´ll come back soon.

Beauty with defects!

It was not the first time we (2 people) spent a wonderful week in that lovely location.
I have been really loving the house for some years. It is a lovely, spacious house, decorated with Portuguese tiles and with a marvellous view over the landscape up to the sea.
The house and the garden are well maintained, but outside no lamp did work.
The technical equipment is absolutely not "luxury". There is no SAT-Receiver, the loudspeaker of the TV (only Portuguese channels available) is defect, the radio does not work without antenna (could not receive a station), CD-Player defect. But the worst things are the freezer/fridge, rusty and disgusting.
Internet access were helpful, is meanwhile standard in most holiday locations.
Pots and pans are sufficient for two.
On arriving the house felt dump and smelt musty. But the central heating works very well and from the second day on the house felt cosy warm.

Lovely situation, village a little too quiet!

4 of us for 2 weeks found plenty of room to spread out, and the site, views and sunsets were second to none. The "breeze" in the first week was more of a howling gale, which drove us indoors for much of the time which was a shame as the pool was then freezing and much too cold for us to use - not being heated it needs the sun constantly to make it bearable. Main drawbacks were that there is NO satellite/cable or CD player as advertised, and because of the breeze and heavy sea mist which was present more often than not, the whole house felt damp and cupboards were musty. Great shame as without this it would have been truly lovely. Also the local restaurant in the village was sadly really poor, (contrary to other reviews) meaning you have to drive everywhere for a meal. On the plus side, we did find good places to eat in Cascais and Setubal, and a fabulous michelin-starred restaurant at Guincho. Sintra is beautiful, but both it and Lisbon are not for the faint-hearted because of the parking problems! Roadworks everywhere tested out navigation skills, but when finished there will be some excellent links in the area.
In summary, if the weather is fair (as it was in our last 5 days) this is a great house, but you need to be prepared to find the micro-climate is not in your favour - and take your own amusements. We have started a small reading library, having been surprised to find no books, and left behind some of our copious collection without which we never travel. Hopefully subsequent visitors will add to this! The locality for those with a car provides plenty of cultural visits, but probably not much for the teenage age-group - younger children will love the beaches which are plentiful and clean.

A magical getaway--highly recommended

Our extended family--seven of us, ranging from 6 to 64 years of age--spent a wonderful week here in June 2009. The villa was even better than it's description. Lots of room to spread out, cool and airy, a pool for the kids, and nooks and crannies everywhere. The house was clean and comfortable. The grounds were incredible--fruit trees with ripe fruit, views of the ocean (with ocean breezes), and paths for exploring the surroundings. It was a short walk to the village where they have one of the best restaurants we ate in while in Portugal.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway
