All carefully decorated and equipped to ensure all you need for an enjoyable and comfortable stay. Family pool access, Tennis court, satellite TV, wireless internet access, winter heating, daily cleaning (1.5h). 14 acres mature gardens, 400-tree orchard & 40 acres preserved hillside suited for long walks (approx 32 hectares of land). Our Guest House is part of the green 'oasis' of Quinta dos Bernardos, a large property of beautifully preserved nature. It is 2 min away from the local village of Manique and fantastically located within a 10 min drive from the coastal towns of Estoril and Cascais. World heritage Sintra with its historical palaces and stunning drives or nature walks is 15 min away! Lisbon is a 20 min drive on the motorway. The immediate surroundings, which sadly are not the most attractive, provide all amenities such as 2 large shopping centres including good supermarkets & shops. Also very close to the Estoril, Beloura and Penha Longa golf courses, as well as many beaches, including the world famous Guincho beach. There is plenty to see, visit and enjoy, including excellent restaurants, the local fish and vegetable market, and many pretty villages and lovely old properties within the area.

    50% of payment is refundable for cancellations made 3 months prior to arrival. No refund is possible after that unless by agreement and after a new booking has been achieved for the same period.

Notes: The villa was built some 25 years ago for visiting friends of the family, usually during the summer. For about 4 years we have been renting the house all year round. Paying guests have all loved their stay, mentioning how it far exceeded their expectations! Access to our lovely 20 x 7.7 m family pool. It is conditioned and must be agreed upon prior arrangement.

Directions: Getting to the Guest House is easy: - Take the motorway A5 from Lisbon to Cascais - Take the “Estoril” exit - Take second exit at first large roundabout, towards Estoril - At next roundabout, take first right, direction Sintra - Go straight on, pass the Estoril Golf, go straight through the 1st roundabout, and right at at the 2nd – Alcoitão – direction Tires, S. Domingos de Rana, aerodromo. About 3 kms - Follow this road, go through a small roundabout, pass Galp petrol station on your right (all this is approx 2km) – Pass some new building on right and left but before you enter the village of Manique, signpost on your right, take the road on your left “Estrada dos Bernardos” - Continue for about 1.2km until you reach a high white wall on your right and the green gates of “'Quinta dos Bernardos”. From the motorway exit to us it´s about 7kms - Any problems just call us on 21 915 3513 or 91 726 3425.

Welcome: Staying at our 'Guest House' you´ll be warmly welcomed by the property owners who live in the main house all year round. We´re a family with 4 children of English origin and speak English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Be assured, with or without children, you will have a wonderful and very enjoyable stay. Best seasons are spring, summer and autumn. Electrical heating is available in winter throughout the house. During your stay, we´ll be happy to recommend restaurants, shops, and give you any directions, information or local hints which you may need.

Sculpture Garden: Being art lovers and collectors, a special attraction of the property is our site specific sculpture garden, composed of contemporary Portuguese and Spanish artworks. With 4 sculptures to date, this is a life long project which we are happy to share with those who also appreciate art. Artists includes Susana Solano, Rui Chafes, Lluis Hortalá.

disappointing stay

This property did not come anywhere near the description and was very disappointing.
On arrival and for the first two days there was no hot water, the tv did not work and the person who greeted us did not explain any of the workings of the kitchen appliances, such as they were. The cooker is so old that the indicators on the gauges have been rubbed away so you cannot see what temperature the oven is set at.
The lounge furniture is far from comfortable and if eight people were there as suggested then there would not be enough seats withouy some of them having to use the hardback and uncomfortable dining table chairs.
The cleaning of the kitchen left a lot to be desired but the old equipment did not help this.
The owner failed to turn up to arranged meetings leaving us kicking our heels waiting, something you do not want to do whilst on holiday.
The position of the property is at the edge of an industrial estate with the access road being little more than a dirt track in places. There were dogs barking all night, not the owners fault granted but prospective renters should be aware that sleep may be difficult.
Do not rent this property without transport as it not within easy walkiing distance of any shops or restaurants.
two of our party of six left without staying one night as the place was so bad, the others had to stay as they had small dogs with them and could not find pet friendly other accommodation at short notice.
When the owner was contacted upon our return she denied anything was wrong and that we should have brought concerns up whilst there, very difficult to do when she did not turn up for meetings.
Stay here at your peril, it is not good, and the facilities are far from the luxury described.
Owner's Response: Owner´s quick answer to "A disappointing stay"

These were the first unsatisfied guests we had in 3 succesful years of rental. They were not typical of the guests we have received and maybe that was the trouble. They booked the Villa a mere week before arrival, did not respond in writing to confirm their interest, did not pay the deposit, arrived one day later than the agreed date, and were in fact 6 instead of 8 without warning, deducting the price of the fourth room .

Mrs Linda B., who fails to sign the critical review, left with her husband shortly after arrival, before speaking to us; they left the other guests to resolve the issues they were unhappy about, which, the next day, we ascertained were unfounded.

Upon the guests' arrival, it was explained that the hot water took some time to reach the furthermost bedroom. Due to Portuguese legislation, the system is not permitted to be installed in the house itself, therefore comes from several metres outside the house. Nevertheless the guests complained about the lack of hot water as they had not let it run for long enough. Indeed the following morning, the remaining guests had all had their hot showers. The TV was working in good order as we checked it before the guests´ arrival, and I can only presume they untuned the satellite settings, which we fixed the following day having to call in the TV company.

The cooker is two years' old and works perfectly well. The access to our property is indeed not attractive, but it´s all behind you once you get to the 32 hectares of our land, with lovely mature gardens, tennis court and swimming pool, all of which is walled-in.

Finally, we didn´t fail to any agreed "meeting" as we never met or even heard from Mrs B., until after she had left Portugal and emailed us requesting a refund, which we considered unfounded. In the end, we had a terrible experience cleaning up in the end as the dogs slept on the sofas, and left hair everywhere.

This was but a blimp in our happy relationship with those guests who have stayed with us .and trust we will continue to receive the support of satisfied guests, who have invariably mentioned how their stay exceeded their expectations.

Paradise in Portugal for market weary traders!

Last year we found a little gem on the internet! As Americans working and living in Madrid like all Madrilenos we exit the city in August. In previous years we have happily vacationed in Tuscany, Menorca and San Sabastian/Biaritz but our stay in Portugal was one of the best ever. With two small children and our 70 pound Portuguese Water dog in tow,six world travel saavy adults spent a wonderful week at this lovely guest house hidden away on a private estate outside Lisbon. We were greeted by our lovely hosts on arrival and found a beautiful thoughtfully appointed villa with four separate bedroom suites (nicely decorated) with a long enclosed porch where we could rest, read and keep an eye on the children as they played outside. The grounds are spectacular and the totally fenced property gave us a real feeling of security for small children and our beloved pet. The staff provided us with a fresh basket of garden fresh vegetables each day and we could spend lunches and a dinner or two cooking together in the adequately furnished kitchen. Are there a few small things to overcome? Yes but nothing that anyone taking a European vacation finds a problem. The property is not in walking distance of shops and we knew this from the start. We chose this property to GET AWAY but you will find everything you need is only 10 minutes away and it was a delight to venture out to see all the small coastal spots near by and return to our home in the estate enclosure. Caution for those who are hooked on watching their portfolios-lightning fast internet provided access to our markets in Chicago and one of our guests traded on his laptop and paid for this very reasonably priced vacation several times over! We have stayed in many places all over the world-most were far more expensive for equal amenities but few provided the beautiful respite we enjoyed at the villa where the gracious hospitality of our hosts exceeded our expectations. The only thing better than our vacation at this villa would be a return visit! Go and ENJOY! We did. Plenty of good restaurants and lots to see and do a short drive away.
I would especially suggest this location for a girl's getaway. Take eight good friends and spend a long weekend together cooking, talking, being a tourist and filling up your trunk with bargain pottery from Portugal. Everyone will be bitterly envious of your finds and you cannot have a better time!
