Activities:
Guincho Beach is obviously an important part of the visit. The beach - as you can see from the photographs - is a magnificent expanse of sand with a great view of Cabo da Roca - the westernmost point of continental Europe. Guests enjoy walking on the dunes, wading, swimming - when the water is not too rough or cold - and particularly surfing. For surfers our property has ample room for depositing all equipment in security, and there is space not only for several cars but also for a trailer. Within walking distance of the property is not only the beach - 10 minutes on foot - but also the village of Areia, which has several restaurants. Some grocery shopping is also available. The lovely town of Cascais is a 10 minute drive. Cascais is known for many restaurants of all price ranges and fine shopping. There are splendid walks from Cascais along the waterfront to Estoril or also on the Atlantic side all the way to Guincho. A combined holiday with our cottage in Algarve can be organized
Sintra and Ericeira:
I recommend a visit to Sintra with its three palaces and many mansions and great forest preserves. The route climbs the Sintra mountains and there is a short turn-off to visit Cabo de Roca - the high cliffs which are at the westernmost point of continental Europe. From Sintra there is a delightful road to Ericeira - a blazingly white fishing town known for its sea-food restaurants. Evora and Obidos are other suggested one day excursions.
Lisbon:
Lisbon is about 35 minutes drive from the house. I often suggest leaving the car in Cascais and enjoying the lovely, inexpensive and no-worries train-ride to Lisbon. Taxis are cheap and public transport is finje in Lisbon and is a way of avoiding parking and traffic problems. For those interested in culture, I can suggest musems, churches and concerts. For those interested in restaurants, I have a list from expensive ones to the very memorable cakes of Belem - Pasteis de Belem. Also recommended are trips across the Tagus River - perhaps by the boats linking the 'other side' or crossing one of the two fine bridges. The Arrabida Mountains and the charming fishing town of Sesimbra are in easy reach.
