Casa Carmen is a 2-storey house completed in 2005. The owners use the lower floor for holidays only. The apartment is on the upper floor with a large terrace (20 sq m) facing south west. It is well laid out - the lounge/diner has French windows leading to the terrace; two sofas that open out into beds suitable for children; a dining table + chairs for 4; Internet Free Access, TV and DVD/CD player with library of DVDs.The kitchen area, separated off by kitchen units, is well equipped for 4, with fridge, electric hob, microwave/grill, electric toaster and kettle. Below are secure, private gardens and a courtyard area with a covered BBQ and washing machine. The bedroom with king size double bed has plenty of wardrobe/drawer space and its own private balcony overlooking banana trees with the ocean beyond. Ideal for couples and for families. Both the A and B Apartments are very private and safe, with no other rental units in this property, and can be rented together for larger families.

Madalena do Mar is an attractive rural seaside village with a very long pebbly beach and new promenade. Only 45 mins drive from the airport and 30 mins west of the capital town of Funchal, it sits in the sunniest part of Madeira with a backdrop of mountains to the north below which are extensive banana plantations and cultivated terraces of vegetables and fruit. The recently extended road system, with its tunnels through mountains and bridges over deep ravines, combined with the construction of several new marinas along the coast has opened up this area of the island to tourism. However, this village boasts no hotels - just delightfully friendly people, excellent café/bars and restaurants, a mini-market and plenty of sea swimming. You can marvel at the variety of exotic plants that thrive on the south of the island in the sub-tropical climate, perhaps best enjoyed by walking along the tranquil levadas (irrigation channels) and old mountain paths 'far from the madding crowd.
