Quinta d'Alegria: luxurious traditional house in Funchal + heated pool
This traditional Quinta, built in 1871, was painstakingly restored in 1988 from a ruined state into an award-winning home with rooms that are large, light and luxurious and with surrounding gardens abundant with palm trees, camellias, scented climbers, avocado trees and dazzling bougainvillea. The house sits peacefully on the hillside on the Caminho do Monte below the famous wicker toboggan run, with breathtaking views over its own heated swimming pool to the town and bay of Funchal with sea beyond. The conservatory entrance hall leads to a spacious lounge and dining area, with open log fire for winter evenings and French windows giving access to the gardens and pool. The fully equipped kitchen/breakfast room leads out to a laundry room, BBQ area and shower/WC for use after swimming or sunbathing. Upstairs there is a double en-suite bedroom and a further double and a twin bedroom with shared bathroom - both bathrooms are sumptuous. Maid services is provided by friendly Ciseltine.

Madeira’s charming capital town of Funchal, with its 140,000 inhabitants, sits in a large bowl that rises from a natural deep-water harbour on the south of this sub tropical island to an impressive backdrop of high mountains. It is the island’s centre of activity, with something for everyone: an opera house/theatre, chic shops, street stalls, open market, wine lodges, museums, city parks, bars, cafés and restaurants without number, multi-screen cinema, a Roman Catholic cathedral dating back to the 14th century and an English Anglican Church built in 1822. This beautiful island is famous for its tropical gardens, two championship golf courses, truly wonderful mountain and coastal walking, ocean swimming, sailing, game fishing, etc. and, above all, its friendly Portuguese inhabitants. Verdant and with varied and stunning scenery, it is definitely worth exploring and the new network of roads and tunnels make this so easy now.

Reasons for choosing Madeira
For nature lovers, Madeira has plenty to offer, with superb vegetation, and hundreds of subtropical plants to keep the most enthusiastic gardener occupied. Part of the island has been pronounced a World Heritage protected site, this is the area of the Laurisilva forests which are located in the Western part of the island , an area well worth exploring, especially on foot. Walking the island has become very popular with visitors who can follow long trails along the islands water courses, locally known as levadas. For golfers there are two excellent golf courses, one of which is only a ten minute drive from the house. The capital of the island is of course Funchal, a town which as well as being very attractive and spotlessly clean, has many restaurants for all tastes and budgets, and an excellent variety of individual shops, in addition to several very interesting museums.
More for your comfort and peace of mind
Owner Joy, having adopted this island as her home 26 years ago and with years of experience in the hospitality industry, offers a holiday home which probably rates as the most desirable and luxurious on Madeira. Attractive teak garden furniture with table and chairs are provided, as well as sun loungers and parasols and her gardener will be on hand to keep the pool crystal clear. Maid service is provided by cheerful and very kind maid Ciseltina, who is also responsible for changing all the linen and towels twice a week. She is also happy to do babysitting in the evening on request.
Other Activities tropical gardens, ten pin bowling, cinemas.

The fabulous Quinta d'Alegria

Review Submitted: January 11, 2008, Date of stay: December, 2007
My family and I stayed here for Christmas and New Year 2007-2008 (children are 3 and 6 years old). The villa is just as described and more. A very luxurious and special Quinta with plenty of space. The views are fantastic, especially for the New Year celebrations - the best fireworks in the world! The friendly maid (who knows some English) keeps the villa spotless. The pool is fab fun for all the family too. Don’t forget to buy plenty of meat for the barbeque too. The owner even provides skewers for the yummy Madeira specialty Espetada (beef on skewers).
Five minutes walk from the villa there is a bakery with café bar. Making fresh bread, even whole meal on request. On your way to the bakery you will pass a souvenir shop with good quality gifts run by a couple with perfect English. 20 minutes walk down hill to Funchal (centre) with plenty going on. You must try the Espetada (beef) and espada (fish). The kids love the espada in a bun… healthy burger!
So many places to visit on this beautiful island full of excellent places to eat. Santana is worth a visit with the traditional triangular shaped tiny houses. The Botanic gardens are huge and full of lots to see, including tropical birds, peacocks – white ones too. The cable cars give you a fantastic view lasting 9 minutes each way… leaving from two locations. Try going up the cable car from the Botanic gardens, to Monte (with more gardens which we didn’t have the chance to visit) and down the hill on the famous toboggan run which stops at the end of the street of the villa… they will go slow if you want. The kids loved it!
The agent and the owner are very helpful, any questions answered with both a professional and friendly approach.
Madeira is one of the most beautiful places in the world… enjoy.
