Madeira’s charming capital town of Funchal, with its 140,000 inhabitants, sits in a large bowl that rises from a natural deep-water harbour on the south of this sub tropical island to an impressive backdrop of high mountains. It is the island’s centre of activity, with something for everyone: an opera house/theatre, chic shops, street stalls, open market, wine lodges, museums, city parks, bars, cafés and restaurants without number, multi-screen cinema, a Roman Catholic cathedral dating back to the 14th century and an English Anglican Church built in 1822. This beautiful island is famous for its tropical gardens, two championship golf courses, truly wonderful mountain and coastal walking, ocean swimming, sailing, game fishing, etc. and, above all, its friendly Portuguese inhabitants. Verdant and with varied and stunning scenery, it is definitely worth exploring and the new network of roads and tunnels make this so easy now.

MORE ABOUT CASA BELFLORES: Casa Belflores is a perfect base from which to discover the interesting and busy little city of Funchal (a 10 minute ride on the local bus or 25 minutes' steep walk downhill), and of course you can go further afield to explore the spectacular mountain scenery of inland Madeira; either by foot along the 'levadas' or by car. From both the house and garden there are splendid panoramic views of the whole bay of Funchal, to the harbour and way out to sea. There are spacious terraces in the garden and around the pool for enjoying the sun, although should you prefer, plenty of shade from the old avocado pear trees. The house, which has been carefully restored to a high standard, retains many of its original features including exposed stone work walls, timbered ceilings and quaint interior window shutters and is now furnished with good quality furniture and fabrics in keeping with the character of the house. It is south and west facing and therefore reaps the maximum benefit of the sunshine.

THE POOL: The pool is located in the upper garden of the house in a very sheltered and private location with superb views - a real sun-trap because the white garden walls reflect the sun all around the area. The pool is surrounded by an extensive patio bordered by the luxuriant foliage of silver banana trees and is for the sole use of our guests. Garden furniture, sunbeds and parasols are provided.

IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: Within a short walk there are two small corner shops suitable for basic supplies, and fresh bread. In the town as well as a beautiful market, there are many well stocked supermarkets as well as two health food stores. There is a pharmacy within a ten minute walk and also three local restaurants.

Other Activities: famous tropical gardens and of course Funchal, full of history and charm, is on your doorstep.

Heaven on Earth!

Dizzylizzy Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire
Review Submitted: October 6, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
This was our first vist to Madeira and we stayed in Casa Belflores . The villa was lovely, a home from home. It was furnished to a high specialfication and well maintained. There was every mod con needed to ensure a comfortable stay. The kitchen was well stocked with almost every utensil you required. The pool was kept clean and was a comfortable temperture to swim in.
Tina whom provided maid service three times a week, spoke very little English but was a delightful person and very helpful. Joy the owner was on hand for any questions we had and went far and above her obligations to ensure our stay was a success.
A nice bakery with a coffee shop was closeby and proved to be a real bonus for fresh bread, cakes etc. when we were peckish! There are two restuarants nearby for times when you didn't want to cook for yourself. The garden was very pretty with fruit trees and flowers on two levels with views to die for, Funchal harbour could be seen from the swimming pool level. There is a bus stop just up the road or taxi's can be booked to take you down to Funchal.
There is no air conditioning but it wasn't needed as we found the house kept to a comfortable temperture. We did find that if both showers were used at the same time one would lose their hot water, but we soon got over that by taking turns.
I would recommend this house to friends and family, apart from those whom have toddlers (as it could be stressful due to the levels in gardens, steep steps down to the front entrance and the pool).
Le Monte tropical gardens are well worth a visit and a trip on the catamaran, dolphin watching was the highlight of our holiday.
Not recommended is car hire, as the steep roads up and down are rather scarey. I must highly recommend Joy's cooking and urge you to try at least one of her full course meals during your stay.
A supermarket is conveniently located down in Funchal with taxi's available outside to bring you back to Casa Belflores with your shopping.
All in all a truly delightful and relaxing place to stay.
Owner's Response: Wow, thanks hugely, dizzylizzy! And this reply comes from Judith who handles Joy's rental bookings and totally agrees that her cooking is fantastic!
Your wonderful descriptions, enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment of Casa Belflores will be just what anyone considering a stay here wants to read. You're quite right to mention your reservations about lack of suitability for toddlers and I would say the same applies for anyone with the any mobility difficulty. Car hire and driving on this island is much discussed and opinions vary enormously. Interestingly enough many guests like to explore this beautiful island independently and accept the challenge of roads which can be very narrow and steep at times and drivers whose understanding of roundabouts is totally different to most other countries - even for only a few days of their stay! Many thanks again.

Family Holiday Feb 2007

Shelsie Grantham, Lincolnshire, UK
Review Submitted: November 28, 2008 Date of Stay: February 2008
It was my mother's 70th birthday in February 2008 and as a family we decided to take her on holiday to celebrate. Madeira was somewhere she had always wanted to go and had never been. We chose well.

The accommodation was just perfect, clean, tidy and homely with lovely personal touches throughout. The help and local information given by Joy the owner and Clare the property manager was superb, they could not do enough to make our holiday run smoothly.

Clare arranged a taxi to collect us from the airport, along with the delivery of a hire car to the villa the next day and tickets for the Casino show during the week. Nothing was too much trouble.

A starter pack of teabags, milk and bread etc was waiting for us on our arrival, as were freshly picked bananas off the trees in the garden and vases of fresh cut flowers throughout. The attention to detail was perfect and the difference between an empty rental property and being made to feel like you’re at home and welcome was second to none.

The house provides the most wonderful view over Funchal and the harbour with garden areas where you can sit and catch the sun all day. The kitchen and bathrooms were immaculate, clean and tidy with cleaning products provided. The bedrooms were clean and fresh with plenty of bed linen and towels.

The property sits high in the hills above Funchal and it’s a steep walk down into Funchal with an even harder walk back up but taxis are reasonable at only a few Euros. Madeira is a wonderful temperate island which we would recommend for young and old alike, the gardens on the island are a must as is the wonderful market in Funchal. I would suggest you try to keep out of Funchal town when the cruise ships are in as it becomes pretty busy but the house overlooks the harbour so you will always know how many are in, if any.

The villa is comfortable homely accommodation suitable for all age groups. Perhaps it is not the most practical accommodation for anyone with a walking disability as the property is located in the residential area of Funchal quite high in the hills and there are steps from the road up to the villa and all bedrooms are on the first floor.

For anyone who has a love of gardening, nature and walking accompanied by good food & drink will have found a little piece of paradise.

Enjoy!
Shelly

Memorable Holiday in Madeira

Marjory Jean Crail,Scotland
Review Submitted: November 26, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
This was a superb holiday for 4 senior ladies fit enough to cope with the hilly terrain, steps and stairs. The warm welcome and basket of goodies on arrival gave a fine first impression as did the helpful suggestions as to taxis to and from the airport and tours of the island.
The location of Casa Belflores necessitated taxi or public transport to get around but we did walk down into town one day. Restaurants nearby and a well equipped kitchen meant we could eat out of town if necessary. The Vasco da Gama for example was lovely and friendly.
The accommodation was perfect: clean well equipped rooms and even a log fire one rainy evening. The two bathrooms meant no queuing and we spent many a happy hour sitting by the pool or in the lower garden amongst the flowers and exotic plants. There was a library if we felt like relaxing with a book or tv if we felt like it.
The house was at the bottom of the toboggan run so we were constantly aware of tourists coming and going; but that added to the atmosphere and was not an intrusion.
I can heartily recommend the Casa Belflores.
Owner's Response: Thank you Marjory for your wonderful feedback which will be a great help to potential future guests. As you discovered, the owner of this pretty villa takes great trouble to make her visitors feel welcome and at home and the "welcome basket" of provisions is an example. Fresh flowers picked from the beautiful gardens surrounding the house are another thoughtful gesture. You will also have noticed that the house and gardens are kept immaculately.

Madeira is known for its hilly terrain and the great advantage of staying in this property is its breathtaking views across Funchal. Many guests watch in fascination the cruise ships that visit the harbour and at night sitting on the terrace is a great treat with the array of street lights that turns the views into a fairyland of sparkling lights. The Christmas lights on display from mid-November until early January are particularly stunning.

Early bookings are highly recommended during the month of June for the “Festa do Atlantico” when, over four weekends, different countries put on fireworks displays in competition to win the tender for the internationally-famous fireworks display on New Year's Eve. All these displays are on view at Casa Belflores - amazing and unforgettable!

We look forward to your return visit, Marjory! Best wishes Clare, Island Homes Lda
