One of the best places to stay in Madeira is a traditional Quinta - an old family manor house with luscious gardens. Quinta São Gonçalo, built in 1853 was restored in 1999 and converted into a comfortable quiet and discreet bed and breakfast guest house, with surrounding gardens and tropical fruit trees - banana trees, avocado, paw paw, custard apple, mango and Chinese gooseberry. The Quinta enjoys a spectacular view overlooking the sea with the harbour and centre of Funchal at his feet. The house retains the ambiance of a private house of the old times, with fine paintings and antique furniture. Breakfast is served on the charming and peaceful terrace almost all the year. In the ground floor of the house, there is the living room and dining room ( 70 sq m), the entrance hall that leads to the stairs to the first floor where the 5 bedrooms, each with private bathrooms are situated. As Quinta São Gonçalo is a bed and breakfast accommodation, rooms can be booked separately.

Funchal evenings

There is something magical about the light of a Funchal evening! While you enjoy a drink on the terrace of the Quinta, drink in also the warmth, calm and peace that surrounds you! There are very nice small restaurants nearby (historic old quarter) where one can eat fresh fish, or where you can listen to the 'Fado', the famous Portuguese song, for which a shawl, a voice and heartfelt emotion are the essential ingredients. Or a restaurant (within 5 minutes car ride) where you can eat the typical Madeira 'espetada' (grilled meat) and see and dance Madeirian folklore. Or choose the restaurants up the street from the Quinta where the food is very nice and where yoy can eat typical food of Madeira Island. Quinta São Gonçalo is definitely an alternative to Funchal hotels or to Madeira hotels.

Mountaineering and sea and pool bathing

'Levadas' are watercourses which carry water from springs higher up the mountain sides to irrigate land all over the island. Their banks are lovingly planted with agapanthus lilies and hydrangeas, apart from a profusion of wild flowers. The levada walks are so accessible, so easy to find (10 min car ride from Quinta São Gonçalo), and often effortless to walk, that they become one of the reasons for choosing Madeira for your holidays. Another reason for choosing Madeira Island is the sea. During Summer, go on a safari through the ocean and apart from the breathtaking whale and dolphin spotting experience you will also get a glimpse of ocean wandering sea birds, some of which are found nowhere else in the world! Penha de França Mar Hotel, where our guests have a reduced entrance fee for sea and pool bathing, is located 4 km east from the Quinta São Gonçalo, and it is within an easy to walk or drive. Closer to the Quinta, 2 km, there is a public sea and pool bathing.

Golf and Quinta Sao Goncalo

Golf courses in Madeira and its year-round temperate climate turn Madeira Island into a golfer's paradise. Whichever course you choose (Palheiro Golf course or Santo da Serra Golf course), both offer fabulous views, lush subtropical vegetation or exotic flowers and a challenge. Palheiro Golf is reached in less than 10 min from Quinta São Gonçalo and Santo da Serra Golf is reached in 30 minute drive from the Quinta.
