There are two superb golf courses within easy reach; the 18-hole championship Palheiro golf course and the 27-hole Santa da Serra golf course, both with spectacular views. The neighbouring island of Porto Santo has just opened a new golf course.
Madeira known as the floating island offers plant lovers beautiful gardens; Botanical Gardens with its adjacent Orchid Garden, Palheiro Gardens and the Monte Palace.
Madeira is a walker's paradise and Garajau/Canico is a good location from which to explore different parts of the island using the 'levadas' (paths running alongside man-built irrigation channels). Canico's Tourism Office located in Canico de Baixo will be able to offer information on guided walks available.
SWIMMING: the nearby Reis Magos with its blue flag and at Santa Cruz swimmers can enjoy the sea and pools, the new Santa Cruz Aqua Park with it's flumes, chutes, etc. Madeira offers natural beaches with crystal clear waters and pleasant temperatures.
