Sunny South Western Madeira has only recently been opened up to tourism. Madeira's first ever sandy beach is at Calheta and a new marina there has waterside bars and restaurants for a romantic sunset supper. Madeira's famous levada system offers a tranquil walking experience through breathtaking scenery and the nearest levada walk is only minutes from Vista Atlantico. Backed by soaring mountains and overlooking the azure Atlantic the Calheta area gives a taste of the real Madeira with its friendly people, superb fish restaurants, amazing scenery and cascades of flowers at all times of the year. Funchal is only 30 minutes away.
Arco da Calheta is surrounded by an amphitheatre or arc of mountains with paragliders soaring on the air currents. It has a proper village centre a few minutes walk away with a cafe terrace above the sea and the village church. A short drive will take you to the plateau of Paul de Serra where there are more levada walks at Rabaçal with more amazing vistas.
