Vista Atlantico, villa in rural village on sunny SW coast

Vista Atlantico is a modern house situated just above the pretty village of Arco da Calheta overlooking the Atlantic Ocean about 30 minutes west of Funchal. It has excellent road access to its own garage with electronically operated doors. It provides spacious and elegant accommodation and its balcony and terrace offer unparalleled views of the ocean, the village centre and church and the arc of mountains which embraces the village. Mini-markets, a health centre and a pharmacy are only steps away. Across the road is a friendly bar with a wide range of drinks, ice creams and sandwiches at modest prices. Within minutes driving there are two beaches, one sandy, a good selection of restaurants, supermarkets and a new arts centre.

Western Madeira has recently been opened up to tourism with the opening of the new motorway to Ribeira Brava and a series of tunnels and bridges connecting all the coastal villages. Madeira's only sandy beach is at Calheta, there are two new marinas in the area and new beach and pool facilities at Ribeira Brava. And, of course, Madeira's famous levada system offers a tranquil walking experience away from the coach-loads of visitors who crowd the levadas around Funchal. Backed by soaring mountains and overlooking the azure Atlantic the Calheta area gives a taste of the real Madeira with its friendly people, superb fish restaurants, amazing scenery and cascades of flowers at all times of the year. Funchal is only 30 minutes away. Arco da Calheta is surrounded by an amphitheatre or arc of mountains with paragliders soaring on the air currents. It has a proper village centre a few minutes walk away with a cafe terrace above the sea and the village church.

Notes:

The double bedroom is ensuite and a family bathroom serves the other two bedrooms. All three bedrooms open directly onto the terrace which runs around the house. The bedrooms are on the lower floor but since the house (like many Madeiran houses) is built into a hillside the bedrooms are still high above the neighbouring land and enjoy the same views as upstairs. All the bedrooms have fully fitted wardrobes with ample hangers and plenty of space. The main entrance opens into the lounge-diner area with the kitchen and a WC off. The kitchen opens into the garage so you can park your car and step straight into the house. There is a small balcony off the dining area suitable for breakfasting. The stairs lead down from the dining area and are protected by a child gate. Downstairs there is a utility area with a washer-dryer, an ironing board and iron and a clothes airer. Electric heaters and hot water bottles are provided for the winter months when the evenings can be cool.

A hair dryer is also provided. Outside there is a small garden area to the side of the house. Café tables and chairs provide dining facilities on the lower terrace and there are sun loungers and sun umbrellas. For children there is an inflatable paddling pool and two buckets and spades for the beach. A CD player and radio is provided and there is a television which receives two Portuguese channels via its portable aerial. A DVD player and a generous selection of DVDs is provided. There is a small library of books in English.

Rob & Clare Hadden 07 Nov 05: House was very nice and well furnished. Agent was extremely helpful both before and during our stay e.g. arranging baby facilities. From Gail & Greg Rankin 14 Nov 05: The things we most enjoyed were swimming in the Lido in Porto Moniz; exploring Jardim do Mar (beautiful) and lunch at Tar Mar; dinner at Engenho Velho in Arco da Calheta; the BBQ chicken and home made chips at Solar dos Prazeres - so good we had it twice; walking the levada from the Miradouro round the back of Arco (beautiful views); the DVD's - great selection; the guidebooks - very useful. From Eileen & Simon McManus 7 Jan 06: We very much enjoyed our holiday here. We hadn't realised how spectacular the Christmas lights would be and the children thrived in the sunshine. We found the villa excellent, extremely well equipped and the views glorious.
