Foz do Arelho is a small, typically Portuguese seaside village: it is still relatively undeveloped. There are restaurants and bars both on the beach and in the village. The village is on the mouth of the Óbidos Lagoon - close to the working market town of Caldas da Rainha and the ancient walled town of Óbidos. History and Excursions: Foz is within easy striking distance of Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos, Nazaré, São Martinho do Porto, Alcobaça and Batalha. Within easy day-tripping distance are Lisbon, Sintra, Fátima, Santarem and Coimbra. A train service runs from Caldas to Lisbon. The area is rich in history and is not yet developed and “internationalised” like the Algarve.
Foz has a choice of beaches: on the Atlantic side is a shelving sandy beach with rollers, ideal for strong swimmers and surfers. The lagoon side has sheltered family bathing, ideal for sun-bathing and for children.
