Overview of Area

The Oeste (West) Region of Portugal, just an hour north of Lisbon, is an area of protected and outstanding natural beauty with spectacular cliffs, pristine beaches and local towns and villages steeped in history. Sample mouth-watering local cuisine, in particular the seafood - accompanied of course, by the Region's excellent local wine. The natural attractions of the Atlantic setting include great surfing and the clear waters around the dramatic Berlengas Islands make this one of the best diving locations in Portugal. Those seeking a less energetic way of life will enjoy the abundance of flora and fauna, grand ocean views, and vast stretches of golden sand conducive to relaxing, whilst the historic nearby towns of Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha are a timeless reminder of the area's rich cultural past. The nearby fishing ports of Nazare and Peniche have a string of sea front fish restaurants where its possible to choose your dinner from the day's catch.

Directions from Porto

From Porto Airport Take 1st left after leaving car hire area and take 1st right at next junction. This brings you onto the main road heading to Porto. After approx 6 km, you should see the first signs for Lisboa (Lisbon). Follow on the same road in the direction of A1 Lisboa. You enter onto the A1 motorway and take a toll ticket. You stay on the A1 through to Leiria, a distance of approx 215 km from the airport. There are service stops every 30-40 kms which provide for fuel and restaurants. As you approach Leiria, you will see references for the A8 Lisboa. Follow the turnoff for the A8 – this will continue along a dual carriageway for 10 minutes and will lead to a single lane (this road may be bumper to bumper for 10-15 minutes. As the road changes back to two lanes, stay on the left lane and take the slip-road onto the A8 Lisboa. Once on the A8, you will see references to Nazare on the road signs. After approx 15 minutes, take exit 23 for Pataias.

Directions from Pataias

From Pataias Exit on A8. After passing the toll booth, take the left at the next junction signposted Patiais. After 5 km, you will enter Patiais. Take the 2nd exit at the water fountain roundabout and take the 1st exit at the next roundabout sign-posted Paredes. Stay on this road (for approximately 6 km) and take the 3rd exit at the next roundabout signposted Y. After a few minutes, you come to Paredes de Vittoria.
