Photos and Description of this Minho & Costa Verde holiday cottage 2,1 bedrooms, 1,1 bathrooms, sleeping 4/5, 2/4

A nineteenth century farm house set in the beautiful Minho area and restored to incorporate modern living standards whilst retaining many original features. Here can be found the real essence of Portugal where the only noise one is likely to hear, apart from the occasional car or the local churches chiming the quarter hours, are the farmyard sounds of chicken, sheep and cows. The farm can be rented as a single unit for a group of friends or separately, each house being independent and having a private terrace. There is a central laundry room and a large shared pool.

Details for Quinta da Ribeira 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 5, 1 Bathroom

The Quinta da Ribeira is a two bedroom apartment (1 double room and 1 twin) on the first floor of the house. There is sleeping accommodation for a fifth person in a small curtained apartment off the living room. The ground floor was traditionally reserved for the animals although it now houses a laundry room and store room. The living room has an open fireplace, dining area and extra sofa bed, satellite TV and DVD player. The attractive stone terrace is ideal for outdoor meals. The kitchenette includes a full sized gas oven and 4 ringed hob, fridge freezer, microwave and dishwasher together with smaller kitchen appliances. There is a fully equipped bathroom with bath and shower. A traditional feature of this house is the steep flight of steps leading up to the living areas, this however makes it less suitable for the elderly or families with toddlers.

Set in the beautiful Minho area, midway between the towns of Ponte de Lima and Paredes de Coura, the location is essentially rural. The farm is well placed for sightseeing, however, with Spanish Galicia to the north, the Atlantic beaches to the west, the historic cities of Porto and Braga to the south and the national park of Peneda-Geres to the east. The area abounds in picturesque market towns with their colourful street markets, tiny hill top shrines affording fantastic views and village festas with their traditional religious processions. The local golf course in Ponte de Lima is only a 25 minutes drive in the car. Enthusiasts have told us that golf on the local course is more attractive, considerably cheaper and gives a better game than many of the Algarve courses. Other courses in the area are at Estella and Vigo (Spain) both being approx. an hour's drive away. A car is essential, please check that insurance covers trips into Spain to avoid disappointment.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Minho & Costa Verde, Portugal

Eating Out. Shopping: The nearest restaurant is just over a mile from the property and although it is traditional Portuguese fare good reports have been received regarding both quality and price. The restaurant also does a take away service. There are several good, family style eating houses in Paredes de Coura, a 7 mile drive away, whilst Ponte de Lima boasts some more elegant restaurants for a special evening out. There are 2 small supermarkets in Paredes de Coura where most requirements can be met and an Intermarché, Modelo and Lidl in Ponte de LIma. It must be remembered however that Portuguese supermarkets often do not accept Visa cards so money should be raised first at one of the numerous cash points. There is also a small village store near the local restaurant in the village of Rendufe. For good value for money, variety of products and high quality, however, we recommend a visit to Tui, just over the border in Spain where there is a large Hayleys hypermarket and a Lidl supermarket.

Places of interest in the immediate vicinity.: A couple of miles from the property is the protected area of Corno de Bico. This wild park like terrain is ideal for walking or mountain bike riding. It is the habitat of many rare animals but those most usually seen are the semi wild horses which roam the area. The whole area is very good for walking enthusiasts and ordinance survey maps are available on request. Another local place of interest is the unfinished monastery church of Nossa Senhora de Secouro (Our Lady of Help) and the two local hilltop shrines of Nossa Senhora de Fatima and San Silvestre are worth a visit on a fine day to see the views they afford. Although the nearest sea beach is a 30minute drive, there are plenty of local river beaches for swimming enthusiasts. Look out for the sign 'Praia Fluvial', a very up market one in Paredes de Coura and many 'natural style' ones on the Lima River. Golfing enthusiasts have given excellent reports about the local course in terms of price, quality of play and beauty.

Ponte de Lima: This historic town with its Roman bridge and medieval centre is a must. From the farm house it is fun to park the car on the north side of the river, cross the (now pedestrian) bridge and visit the town on foot. There is a bi-weekly market on a Monday which takes place on the river bank and there are various specialist markets at other times. There is also a nautical club where canoes can be hired, a riding school, (riding only on the premises) and the golf course. The north bank of the river has recently been developed into a series of gardens which make for a pleasant stroll. Slightly further afield there is a fish farm where visitors are lent rods and tackle and can catch their own supper. The trout is either grilled on the spot or you can take it home to cook yourself. Hang gliding is also practised in the area but this seems to depend very much on weather conditions and we have been unable to discover much about it.

Other Activities: canoeing

A lovely rural retreat

Monica & Iain Gloucestershire UK
Review Submitted: July 12, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
The Minho region in northern Portugal is a beautiful, unspoilt area of the country, in the middle of which there is Casa do Ribeiro. It is a great place to stay and ideally situated for touring the region. It is a truly rural location, but within easy access to the local towns with their markets, shops, cafes and restaurants.
The accommodation is second to none. Everything that could possibly be needed for a comfortable holiday is provided, and more. We were four adults staying in Quinta da Ribeiro and there was plenty of space. The pool area, with stunning views over terraced hills and valleys of vineyards and maize fields, was a joy to use and relax by. The lovely gardens have several attractive sitting areas in which to enjoy a meal or just chill out.
Having a car is essential as the area has a wealth of towns and villages with historical or local interest. The farmhouse is within easy driving distance of some superb beaches on the west coast, a beautiful national park to explore and walk in and is in relatively close proximity to Spain for a raid over the border as well.
Thank you Margaret and Alex for providing such a great place to stay, being such welcoming hosts and being part of making our holiday as good as it was.
Owner's Response: We really enjoy meeting and getting to know our guests and we are very happy that you enjoyed your holiday so much. As you point out the cottage is perfect for those wanting a relaxing holiday to unwind but there is also plenty to do and see locally for the more energetic. Walking enthusiasts are well catered for with trails varying from a gentle stroll to an envigorating full day hike.
Thank you so much for your kind words and we are really looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

Excellent stay

Leigh and Karen Glasgow
Review Submitted: July 19, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
This cottage was fantastic. We had a great time and absolutely loved our time there - so much so we thought we might not write a review in case it becomes too popular. We stayed at the Lagar cottage which was fantastic and perfectly suited to our purposes (young couple mainly sightseeing and lying beside the pool). Margaret and Alec were extremely welcoming and had left a lovely bottle of wine and some eggs - wonderful. The views are amazing and we especially loved watching the swallows swooping on the pool.

We found lots of places to visit but also just enjoyed the quiet atmosphere of the cottage and its surroundings. The gardens were lovely to look at as well. We will definitely try to return.
Owner's Response: One of our favourite things about the property is watching the swallows bomb diving the pool. They not only help us to keep it clean by devouring the drowned insects but actually play there on very hot days, swooping down and dipping their breasts into the water to keep cool. A very simple, natural occurence but, as you say, a delight to watch.
We loved meeting you both and are really happy that you enjoyed your holiday. Our chief concern is always that our guests are fully satisfied with the service we provide and that the property, if anything, exceeds expectations.
All the best to you both for the future and we look forward to seeing you again one day.

Rural Portugal at its best

Stephen & Lorna Northern Ireland
Review Submitted: July 31, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
A beautiful location full of warmth and character. Unpretentious in the very best sense, the property has been restored and furnished with love, integrity and an architect's eye for detail.

The view from the pool over terraced fields, stone walls and the ubiquitous vines, the church bells and the local farms contribute to a truly relaxing environment. Of course all the necessary mod cons are there, but dishwashers and surround-sound DVD players notwithstanding the modern world does seem to recede at Quinta da Riberia.

A bigger contrast to the Mediterranean could be hard to imagine - lush countryside and few English speakers outside tourist areas.

Our three children, 5, 6 and 8 loved it.

The rural location does mean a trip whenever supplies are needed and blindly following the GPS can lead through some interesting roads!

Recommended - Braga - atmospheric and child-friendly; Ponte de Lima (of course - but don't miss the gardens on the north side of the bridge); easy walks in the Peneda-Geres park above Soajo; kids playing in the fountains in Paredes de Coura (good river beach - go in the morning and you will have it to yourself!)

Many thanks to Margaret and Alex for their warm welcome and Silvia for her attentive and prompt response to our queries.
Owner's Response: We really enjoyed meeting you and your family and take great pleasure in getting to know our guests. Some great ideas for other visitors to try, from those with young children to retired couples who enjoy walking and country life. Thank you so much for your kind words and we very much hope to see you again some day.

We did go back

Review Submitted: December 19, 2007 Date of Stay: October 2006
and found it just as we remembered. Both properties are as comfortable as the other , our welcome was warmer than ever . Easy to get too, and find, from either Porto or Santiago, but far from the "madding" crowd. Rural life at its best. Highly reccommended - our children loved it.
