The house is a recently restored stone farmhouse on the banks of the River Zêzere in the rural centre of Portugal. The surroundings are peaceful and bucolic with views of the river and of low wooded mountains from the deck of the house. Inside, the large living room with cathedral ceiling is simply furnished with sofa and comfortable chairs, antique table and shelves with many books, mostly in English. Beyond is the dining room with fireplace and the kitchen which is newly equipped but has retained the old stone bread oven. 2 bedrooms. The house is surrounded by trees, an orchard and garden. It is one of only 5 houses in a little settlement 1 km upriver from Dornes, a village which has a 12th century tower and church built by the Knights Templar. Tomar and its famous convent are about 20 min. away by car. This is a fine place for swimming, rowing, bird-watching and eating meals outside on a deck with an enchanting view.

Notes to the rental rates

• Rentals other than in July and August are negotiable. In those months (Jul/Aug) we require a minimum stay of 12 days. We are interested in longer-term rentals in winter and spring and are open to proposals depending on the number of people involved. However, when autumn, winter and spring rentals are involved, tenants will have to pay for the tanks of gas used in central heating.

Trips from the farm

The farm is in the area known for sites and history connected to the Knights Templar. The city of Tomar (about 30 km away) has the famous Convent of Christ, a major tourist site, as well as an excavated synagogue and other historical buildings. Other towns in the region have castles, manors etc. Within easy driving distance there are rural markets, excellent very cheap country restaurants. The coast is about 1 1/2 hours away with good beaches at São Pedro de Muel and Figueira da Foz.

Swimming, boating, fishing

Only a few hundred meters from the end of the deck off the living room lies the River Zêzere and unspoiled scenery of low mountains. The deck is perfect for reading and bird-watching. The river water is clean under EU norms because the river at this point is a reservoir. You can use a rowing boat and can swim from a large raft off our property. Fishing is possible by arrangement with our neighbour, Francisco. Nearby is a water sports club with boats to rent for water skiing, paddle-boating and sightseeing along the river.

Neighbours

Our neighbours are our friends, and one family is always ready to help our guests or visitors. They are familiar with the hot water and heating system, and can assist with any inquiry or emergency--but they don't speak English.
