Beautifully restored stone farmhouse set in the countryside but only 10/15 minutes drive to the historic towns of Braga and Guimarães. The farm makes its own red and white wine, which is free for guests and there are hundreds of fruit trees surrounding the property. The accommodation consists of the entire ground floor of the farmhouse and is very spacious and tastefully decorated. The owners (a Portuguese-British family) live on the first floor and have their own entrance. They are at hand to give guests recommendations, directions, updates on the weather. The sitting room was the original stone wine house and its door opens onto a wisteria covered pergola with a table and chairs where guests can enjoy eating out al fresco. Next to this is a barbecue area. The garden is extensive, walled in and guests are welcome to sit at the sunken fish-pond garden and wander through the vines and fruit trees. Behind the house there are many woodland walks. The kitchen is well stocked

The area is very scenic and the house, situated in the mountains, has breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside. Behind the house there are lots of woodland walks through the forest. The north of Portugal is renowned for its gastronomy and vinho verde wine and the area around Longos has many reasonably priced restaurants. The traditional farmhouses of the area are built in granite, the local stone. 3 minutes drive from the house is the village of Santa Cristina de Longos which has a good bakery, butchers and grocery shop. Caldas das Taipas is 5 minutes away with a colourful Monday market and lots of cafes, restaurants, a thermal spa and a good supermarket. There are also 2 outdoor public swimming pools and a children's park. The house is set in the country but is within 20 minutes of the beautiful historic towns of Braga and Guimarães. The nearest beach, Esposende, is only 35 minutes away and Geres national park is also close at hand.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Guests pay half the full amount due at the time of booking and the other half at the time of arrival. If guests are only coming for 4 nights( in low season ) the property is rented out at 300 pounds sterling for 4 nights. The owners always buy in some fresh food for the kitchen/fridge. Free wine is also provided.
    The bathrooms are stocked with shower gel, soap. The kitchen has washing up liquid, soap, washing powder etc
    The property is abundant with fruit trees and guests can help themselves to peaches, plums, oranges etc - whatever is in season.
    Free wood is provided for the wood burner.
    No charge is made for use of the washing machine, use of bicycles.

  • Both bathroom are large and well decorated. There is no bath, only showers. For parents with small children or babies they may arrange with the owners to use the bath upstairs. The owners provide soap, bath gel etc for each of the bathrooms. Bath and hand towels are provided.

  • All three bedrooms are very large and the Pine and Green rooms have views over the mountainside. The Pine room, with a double bed, has a bathroom opposite. It looks onto the garden and has beautiful views over the mountains and valleys. The Green room, with a double bed, has French windows opening onto the front of the house. The room is very light and airy and the view is superb, looking over the garden with mountains and valleys. There is a pergola running along the whole front of the house and vines, roses and passion flowers are triained to cover the pergola. The Yellow room is very spacious and has two large single beds and a double sofa bed, suitable for 2 children or 1 adult. It looks onto the side of the house, stone walls with flowers draping down and the side garden. There is a bathroom between the Green room and the Yellow room. All rooms are large, bright and airy and very individual . Romantic white mosquito netting drapes all the beds to ensure a good night's sleep

Notes: Guests are on the ground floor so wheelchair access is good however the outside area is paved, which can be quite bumpy for a wheelchair. Also, there is no downstairs bath. Families with babies can use an upstairs bath, after arranging a suitable time with the owners. The kitchen is well equipped, including facilities for washing clothes - a washing machine, an ironing board and an iron. Guests have their own clothesline. The sitting room, which has wooden doors which open onto the patio area, has a wood burner and the whole apartment has central heating. The owners have the internet ( and a fax machine ) in the upstairs part of the house and guests wishing to use these facilities are welcome to do so. The hosts have a spare Sat Nav so those wishing to borrow it may do so. The owner of the house tries to provide a hot meal for all guests arriving. It is left in the apartment, along with wine from the farm.

Food: There are lots of excellent restaurants in the area and the sitting room is provided with an information file for guests, pointing out the price range of the various restaurants and giving directions how to get there. The owners provide food for guests arriving at the house - the food depends on the time of day that guests arrive. Wine ( vinho verde ) is also free as it is made at the farm.

Eat well,walk lots, swim, visit historic towns: The owners of the farm have an up to date information file for guests and in the sitting room there is a DVD of the places of interest near the house There are lots of walks around, swimming pools in Taipas, childrens play parks in Taipas and at Bom Jesus ( 5-10 minsa away). Lots of water sports at Geres national park, 40 mins away. There is an excellent adventure park, Diverlanhoso, for teenagers 30 mins away. Lots of places to visit such as Braga and Guimarães ( hisoric towns), Porto, the Douro valley, Viana do Castelo ( seaside) and Esposende ( seaside ). The area abounds in monasteries ( Tibães), cathedrals ( Braga ), churches, parks and gardens. For those interested in history there is Citania de Briteiros which is a Celtic settlement, 10 mins away. There are restaurants and cafes in Longos, Taipas and of course Braga and Guimaraes - it is possible to eat out very reasonably

The grapes grown make vinho verde: Wine is made on the farm and guests are welcome to wander around the vines and look around the adega (wine house). Free white and red wine is provided to guests. The wine is called Serra de Lombão, the name of the mountain range in front of the house. Portugal itself has excellent wines- the reds from the Douro and the Alentejo are sold in the local supermarkets and are definitely worth trying ( and enjoying ). Vinho verde ( can be red or white ) is very regional - most people who are new to the area love the white and are not too keen on the red. The locals drink the red out of bowls ( 'malgas') !

It was the detail in the description and the thought that had gone into providing the extra touches that first attracted me to this property.
When we arrived we continued to be very impressed. There was a welcome pack in the kitchen & Virginia & her family made us feel at home immediately.
The property was very spacious, clean & equipped to the highest standard with good quality items.
Virginia had prepared a comprehensive list of local ameneties & directions to the nearby attractions. The property is ideally placed for visiting several attractive cities(Porto, Braga, Guimaraes) along with beautiful countryside destinations such as the national park at Penedas Geres & the Douro Valley vinyards.
The approach to the property is initially a bit challenging because the road is very steep, but after the first couple of times of driving it you will become more relaxed.
I would not hesitate to recommend this property. It lived up to & exceeded our expectations.

The north of Portugal is all windy roads and pretty mountainous, which adds to its charm but also makes sure the driver doesn't fall asleep ! When we first bought the house in the year 2000 I wondered if my old Honda Civic would make it up the hill - once I'd done it once or twice I actually got to enjoy the drive - it's like a long private avenue and you rarely meet any cars.
Most people, when they get here, say it's like paradise on earth and ask me how I can bear to leave the place - it is indeed a very inspiring place to live and I don't intend to ever sell up and move on !
With three young children it's the ideal place for them to grow up. Lovely countryside, surrounded by vines and fruit trees but only 10 minutes from Braga and 20 minutes from Guimarães. We think we've got the ideal location...
