FLIGHTS / CAR HIRE:
The closest airport is Lisbon which is 50 minutes drive to the resort. BA, TAP and Easy Jet operate regular services to Lisbon. Low cost flights can also be booked through Ryanair into Oporto which is a 2.5 hour journey to the resort. In my experience early booking, including car hire from the UK is recommended, although last minute deals can also be had , particularly at off peak times. Picking up hired cars at Lisbon Airport is very straight forward and I have detailed directions from the airport to the resort which is mainly motorway (A8).
ACTIVITIES:
As well as the Championship golf course there are 7 all weather tennis courts with lessons and competitions organised throughout the season. The outdoor activity centre, Clube Aventura offers a variety of onsite and offsite activities including Surf, Body board, Quad Biking, Paintball, Archery and Kayaking for children and families. The 5 Star Marriott Hotel has a fitness club, health and beauty salon along with impressive bars, terraces and restaurants to relax in afterwards. There are fantastic cliff top paths and walks along the pristine white beaches. The rollers at Praia D'El Rey and neighbouring Baleal beach also attract body boarders and surfers whilst 3km away is the Obidos Lagoon with calmer waters for windsurfing, paraglide, sailing and paddling for the younger children. There is also a swimming pool at the apartment with children's pool area. Horse riding and bikes can be hired locally and day trips from Peniche to the Berlengas Islands can be taken in the summer months.
HISTORY:
Nearby is the port and fishing village of Peniche and the medieval walled town of Obidos, with its narrow winding streets paved with beautiful stone. Obidos is known for its typical white washed houses with flowered windows, local craft shops, interesting cafes and excellent restaurants. A walk along the ramparts offers some great views for those with a head for heights! Twenty minute drive away is the colourful market town of Caldas da Rainha with the largest Church ever built in Portugal and home to the Malhoa Museum devoted to accomplished artist and famous local ceramist. The whole region has a calendar of local events, music and festivities throughout the year where visitors are warmly welcomed to join in with the local celebrations. More details and restaurant recommendations are available at the apartment. Please do not hesitate to email for further pictures and local information.
