Attractive Rural Cottages in Santarem, Central Portugal

These two recently restored rural cottages are in a delightful country setting about 50 minutes north of Lisbon easily reached from the A1 motorway. The property has beautiful uninterrupted open country views to the South yet is located on the edge of a small hamlet with 2 cafés and a small shop only 100 metres away to the North; an ideal situation. There is an ample garden and you can also enjoy the fruit from the trees, when in season. There is a large swimming pool shared by both cottages, a sun deck area and a barbecue. There are several bicycles, a tennis table, croquet set and other equipment to add to the pleasure of your stay. It is a great centre for touring, and Santarém (known as the Gothic capital) is 10km. to the South with plenty of shops, cinemas etc. There is a straight motorway link to the coast about 40 minutes away and good restaurants all around.

The property is in the Ribatejo region, on the Tagus river north of Lisbon. It is known for its farming, horses, bull-fighting and wine production but is also a region steeped in historical monuments. The countryside is ideal for walking and cycling. This is not an area of mass tourism. The people in this region are very honest and friendly and you are assured of a warm welcome. The regional food is excellent. There are open markets every weekend somewhere close by, and the towns have large supermarkets and all the other likely needs for your stay.

Notes:

Both cottages have fully electric kitchens and water heating systems. They are reasonably cool in the summer due to their traditional thick walls, and are heated when necessary by very effective permanent wood burning stoves located in the living rooms. Electric oil filled heaters are also provided. The location is excellent for touring, for walking, bird watching and other rural pursuits. Bicycles, games and other equipment are available. We provide a good information pack in the cottage detailing local sights, monuments, restaurants and things to do. The swimming pool is NOT fenced. Parents should bear this in mind if considering bringing small children. Please bring your own towels for use in the pool or on the beach. There are several golf courses in the area. Óbidos (40 mins.), Rio Maior (30 mins.) and 6 courses in Lisbon (50 mins.) The beaches are about 40 minutes away however, the journey is very easy with a good motorway link.
