Golfing and Walking nearby:
The Torwoodlee Golf course is a 5 mile drive from Clachan Cottage. The Club welcomes visitors. There are numerous walks in the Scottish Borders, many of which can begin directly from the Cottage!
Historical Sites :
Within a 10 - 30 minute drive from Clachan Cottage are historical sites such as: Melrose Abbey in Melrose, Thirlestane Castle in Lauder, Gala Aisle and Gala House in Galashiels, Floors Castle in Kelso, Crichton Castle near Path head, and many others. Find a Borders Guide book in the cottage upon your arrival to get some ideas of where to go and what to see.
The village of Stow is a half a mile walk down a private driveway. In the village is a GREAT new Coffee shop/Cafe/Art Gallery, which has a small play area for children. There is also a post office/grocery store/newspaper shop in the village. You can also take a bus from the village into Edinburgh, which takes approx. 1 hour.
Mountain Biking:
The Glentress Forest, located 17 miles away, (near Peebles) is a haven for mountain biking enthusiasts. It is meant to be the best center in the UK for mountain biking, and potentially the best in Europe. It has an excellent cafe and bike shop which has bike rentals, demonstrations, lessons, events. The paths are designated for bikers or hikers, which makes life easier for everyone. Walkers would also find this place beautiful. The landscape is stunning and it is well worth a trip. The drive down the road from Stow to Thornylee up towards Peebles is one of the prettiest drives in the Borders.
