Golfing and Fishing nearby: The Torwoodlee Golf course is a 5 mile drive from Clachan Cottage. The Club welcomes visitors. There are numerous walks in the Scottish Borders, many of which can begin directly from the Cottage! Fishing can be arranged for you or independently.
The Tweed boasts many salmon pools and there are hundreds of locations to fish in locally. We can prearrange fishing for you if you wish, or can put you on to some local beats where you can arrange your own fishing!
Historical Sites : Within a 10 - 30 minute drive from Clachan Cottage are historical sites such as: Melrose Abbey in Melrose, Thirlestane Castle in Lauder, Gala Aisle and Gala House in Galashiels, Floors Castle in Kelso, Jedburgh Abbey, Crichton Castle near Pathhead, and many others. Find a Borders Guide book in the cottage upon your arrival to get some ideas of where to go and what to see.
The village of Stow is a half a mile walk down a private driveway. In the village is a new Coffee shop/Cafe/Art Gallery, which has a small play area for children. There is also a post office/grocery store/newspaper shop in the village. You can also take a bus from the village into Edinburgh, which takes approx. 1 hour.
Mountain Biking and Walks: The Glentress Forest, located 17 miles away, (near Peebles) is a haven for mountain biking enthusiasts. It is meant to be the best center in the UK for mountain biking, and potentially the best in Europe. It has an excellent cafe and bike shop which has bike rentals, demonstrations, lessons, events. The paths are designated for bikers or hikers, which makes life easier for everyone. Walkers would also find this place beautiful. The landscape is stunning and it is well worth a trip. The drive down the road from Stow to Thornylee up towards Peebles is one of the prettiest drives in the Borders.
Plentiful and stunning walks in the region. You can also have some great walks on the farm -- but stick to the paths to avoid the odd bull or two that we have on the farm!
Ski:
There is an artificial ski slope located 20 miles away, in the Pentland Hills, just on the Edinburgh ring road. Very popular with the kids and first-time skiers!
