Clachan Cottage is located just outside of Stow, a small village nestled in a valley, 25 miles from Edinburgh. It is a rural hill farming area with great access to Edinburgh up the A7 road. Many towns of historical interest are nearby. The valley is surrounded by dramatic green hills and has amazing views. It is extremely quiet and peaceful -- one can hear the burn outside flowing from inside the cottage. It is a great getaway for families or couples as it is so relaxing, though there are numerous things to do nearby -- historical sightseeing, visits to Edinburgh, visits to the beach or to a nearby spa, etc. One half mile walk down the drive brings you into the village, which has an excellent coffee shop/gallery and a post office/small grocery store. The main artery road to Edinburgh is just a stone's throw from the post office and one can take a bus to Edinburgh from here (1 hour). There is something to do for every age in this lovely area.

Mountain Biking and Walks: The Glentress Forest, located 17 miles away, (near Peebles) is a haven for mountain biking enthusiasts. The paths are designated for bikers or hikers, which makes life easier for everyone. Walkers would also find this place beautiful. The landscape is stunning and it is well worth a trip. The drive down the road from Stow to Thornylee up towards Peebles is one of the prettiest drives in the Borders.

Plentiful and stunning walks in the region. You can also have some great walks on the farm -- but stick to the paths to avoid the odd bull or two that we have on the farm!

Clachan Cottage - what an experience

Review Submitted: May 19, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2008
We're just about to visit Clachan Cottage for the 4th time, and I would urge anyone who wants to enjoy the countryside in all its splendour to visit. We have 3 young boys, and it's an ideal retreat for them, somewhere they can play safely, enjoy seeing the animals, ride their bikes to their hearts content and enjoy fresh Scottish air - in fact our boys have again chosen 2 weeks in Scotland as opposed to 2 weeks abroad!!
Iver and Wendy always make us feel welcome, and make everything very easy to enjoy.
If you're still in doubt..............try it, it's fantastic
