Autumn/Winter in Villamartin

This was our second stay in Rick's apartment. We spent 10 weeks in total and had a fantastic time. The location is perfect, we had many happy hours on the verandah watching the wildlife on the grassed area in front of the property. The olive trees, pines and palms that grow there are a home for a variety of birds, and the red squirrels chasing each other round the trunks kept us amused for hours.
The pool was lovely, and even if you don't swim there is plenty of space to take a chair and just sit with a book. It was still warm enough to swim at the end of October!
The apartment was equipped with everything we needed, and had lots of comfy seating, especially the sofa on the verandah!! A brilliant idea especially as the verandah is a sun trap. Even on cool breezy days we could sit in comfort and catch the rays.
Within a 10-15 minute walk we found a huge variety of shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants.
The coast is easy to get to by car and there are lots of beautiful, sandy beaches to choose from. The Mar Menor, a small enclosed sea, is a must to visit, especially at Lo Pagan. There you will find a wildlife area where you can see the flamingoes, or you can walk along the salt lakes and cover yourself from head to toe with the rich black mud, good for all ailments. A more pampering version is available at the nearby Thallasatherapy Clinic complete with fluffy white bathrobes when you've washed it off!!
For a real Spanish experience day trips to Torrevieja, Alicante, Orihuela, Elche or Cartegena are highly recommended. Try the tapas wherever you go for an inexpensive but delicious meal.
For eating locally we didn't have a bad meal wherever we ate. Chirinquita No 1 at Los Dolces is German and has a good menu del dia. La Piazza at La Fuente was good for Italian food and does takeaway pizza. Casa Adolfo on the N332 at Cabo Roig is a typical Spanish restaurant that serves wonderful food at reasonable prices with a superb house wine.
We found Rick's agent Elaine very helpful when we had any queries. Overall our Villamartin experience was wonderful and we can't wait to return later in the year.
