Places of Interest:
Cabo Roig has a beautiful small marina and two Blue Flag beaches. It is a 15 minute drive to the main town of Torrevieja. The climate, with more than 320 days of sunshine a year makes it a popular all year destination. Its salt flats with 2 lagoons surrounding it are famous for being the home of some 250 different bird species. These lagoons have been designated as national parks and offer beautiful views including flamingos. From ancient Roman times the flats have been used for salt production and it still provide salt exportation today.Tabarca Island is a 30 minute ferry ride from Santa Pola. Alternatively you can book a day trip on a glass bottom boat to the island from Torrevieja. The sea life is plentiful and varied, due to Tabarca being a protected Nature & Marine reserve. Approx 1.5 hr drive south is La Manga.
Terra Mitica theme park is 1.5 hr drive just outside Benidorm, this is a great family day out for grown ups & children alike.
Leisure:
There are numerous glorious beaches, as you would expect in the Torrevieja area. La Mata, La Zenia, Playa Flamenca, Los Locos, El Cura and Lo Ferris to name just a few. These are some of the best (blue flag) beaches in the Mediterranean and most have entertainment area for children, volleyball nets, bars and restaurants. Plus of course, golden sand and crystal clear water. The climate and the beaches of course lend themselves to a variety of water sports like wind surfing, surfing, water skiing and so on. The International Sports Marina also offers facilities for yachting and diving. Paragliding is also very popular in the area and there a couple of centres just up the coast at Santa Pola. The town also has a new Sports Palace which is a state of the art complex with facilities for most sports, such as squash, football, swimming, badminton, basketball etc. The Aqua Park has lots of water slides suitable for all ages and is well worth a visit. Horse riding and Go Karting also available.
The Climate:
The climate in the Torrevieja is said, by the World Health Organisation, to be one of the healthiest anywhere in the world. The combination of the salt lakes and the surrounding mountains creates a unique microclimate. This climate is said to be good for sufferers of arthritis, rheumatism and asthma. Certainly 320 days of sunshine, an average yearly temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and very low annual rainfall, isn't going to do you any harm!
Golf:
Torrevieja and its surrounding areas is a paradise for golf players. There are several excellent golf courses, such as Villa Martin, Las Ramblas, Campoamor, La Marquesa and La Manga, in the area. All courses are challenging in their own way, some are park like, whilst others have plenty of hazards and those devilish gorges that are typical of golf courses in Spain. They are all of championship length (18 holes), and are less crowded than the ones at Costa del Sol. At Costa Blanca every golfer is sure to find the course of his dreams - some of which offer the cheapest fees in Europe
Campoamor is a course for the very big hitters. It has the longest par 3 of any course in the area, and is located amongst the Orange Groves. Las Ramblas has holes that are designed so that in most cases you have to hit over ravines. Remember to bring a lot of golf balls for this course!
