The ancient city of Elche is a few kms south of Alicante and has many historical and cultural buildings. During the 19th Century the Dam of Elche was discovered. The bust dates back from the 4th Century BC and is now the official symbol of the city. Elche is also famous throughout Spain for its growing and exporting of palm trees around the world. With over 200,000 palm trees in the city, palm groves are now preserved by law and great care is taken in reforestation.
