Two apartments in rural village between sea and mountains

The two self-catering apartments are on the first two floors of a traditional, stone-walled house - which has been tastefully renovated - on the edge of the rural village of Rabós, lying between the beaches of the Costa Brava and the mountains of the Pyrenees. Walk among vineyards, wander through olive groves, explore the gentle slopes of the Pyrenees - or take the kids to the 4km sandy beach at the resort-town of Roses. Or join some of the many activities in the area: snorkeling in limpid waters, visiting historic sights or participating in village fiestas. Or drive 20 mins to the border with France and explore the old city of Perpignan and sample a south of France cuisine.

Both the living room - a former wine cellar - and the bedroom look onto the spacious, 200-year-old patio, which has a barbecue, flowering bougainvillea, jasmine and other colourful plants, and which provides a lovely setting for an evening’s family festivity, or a special occasion among friends.

The two apartments are situated on the edge of the wine-making village of Rabós, between the beaches of the Costa Brava and the mountains of the Pyrenees. The area is still rural. The steep, cobbled streets and thick-walled stone houses are clustered round a 12th century Romanesque church. Vineyards and olive groves cover adjacent terraces, and the vast plain of Empordá stretches away to the Gulf of Roses. On the north side, gently undulating wooded slopes rise to the high peaks of the Pyrenees and to a wilderness area, criss-crossed by lonely tracks and trails, ideal for walking (ambles to rambles), sketching, birdwatching, cycling, picnicking and other peaceful pursuits.

Sightseeing

The historic village of Perelada, with gardens, lake, castle, moat and golf course - and a casino - is 11kms away. The Dali town of Figueras, apart from the famous Dali museum, has trendy shopping in a maze of pedestrian-only streets near the town hall (ayuntamiento), and is the main centre for services and entertainment - 20 mins by car. Former fishing village-cum- art-centre of Cadaques, with Dali's house near the beach at Port Lligat and with the unspoilt coast of the adjoining nature reserve, is 34km away. FOR THE YOUNG Aqua Brava water park playground with slides, pools and beach - near the resort-town of Roses. Dolls´ Museum with 3,000 toys on display - Figueras. Sandcastle beach (safe bathing) facing the waterfront in Roses. Go-Karting Park - Roses. Parc Natural de l ´Aiguamolls, an extensive wild bird sanctuary: explore the wetlands and feed the storks - 20 min from Rabós.

Beaches, etc.

There is a wide selection of beaches in and near Llançá and near Roses (20 mins), some very popular with many amenities, others almost deserted. In the Cap de Creus peninsular (35 mins), the rocky coast is broken by many coves and small beaches, with limpid water and usually with few other visitors or none at all - but there are no amenities. Rabós is one of several wine-making villages in the foothills of the Pyrenees, linked by quiet country lanes. Each village has its own local-produce cooperative and wine may be purchased from the barrel very inexpensively. The village of Rabós is a wonderful opportunity to get to meet the people, share the Spanish way of life, and join in colourful fiestas.
