Beautifully restored, ecological farmhouse 'Can Merla' with fantastic sunset views, situated in the quiet 'gavarres' natural reserve mountain range. (more restorations done during winter 2007, pictures to be updated soon!) The farm has a large living room decorated with antique furniture with a fireplace, an inner patio-garden, kitchen with gas stove and gas fridge, dining room, large terrace, salt water swimming pool (has less salt then the sea!!), surrounded by 15 HECTARES of fields and woods with olive trees, cherry trees, almond trees, oak trees etc. On location there is a caretaker. The caretaker will take care of the plants, the pool and proper functioning of the house.

It is 30 min / 25km drive from Girona airport, 70min / 100km drive from Perpignan airport and 90min / 120km drive from Barcelona airport. Girona airport has ryanair flying from Luton and Stanstead airport from the UK. Although the farmhouse is 'remote' there are three supermarkets at only 7km / 12 min. The last 2 km are a dirt track. The location is ideal for day trips; 30 min from La Bisbal, 30 min from beaches, 30 min from Girona centre, 60 min from Figueras, 90 min from Barcelona, 40 min from Besalu and Banyoles, 30 min from Tossa del mar,

  • Included are bed linen and bathroom towels for one week. Beach and pool towels are not included. Should you wish to change bedlinen and towels it will cost 10 euros per person. Cleaning is not included in the rental price. An extra 12 euro per hour will be charged for cleaning. 500 euros deposit plus 1750 euros weekly rent payable on booking.
    Preferred changeover day is Saturday.

The property is at the end of a 3km dirt road. There are no telephones, but mobile phones have good coverage. The pool is about 10 meters by 4 meters and 1.5 meters deep.

This is an ideal holiday retreat for people who enjoy and respect quietness and nature, walking, relaxing drinking wine watching the sun set. However still being close to the many historical sights of Girona and the Costa Brava.

A brilliant place to stay

Whilst reading the previous reviews, I've been nodding all the time: "yes, yes, that's exactly how it is!". True words indeed to give you an idea of the unparalleled character of Can Merla. We too were lucky enough to experience it all recently: a warm welcome by two lovely people (and two dogs), beautifully designed rooms with that final romantic touch everywhere, spectacular views from every angle of the house; nothing but peace and quiet, short-toed eagles soaring above your head by day, and the cry of a nightjar or a scops owl at night. If you are familiar with the expression "living like God in France" you will no doubt be convinced that back in those days the bounderies of southern France must have included that part of Catalonia where Can Merla is situated...!
Owner's Response: It is indeed fascinating how many different species of birds we have in the area and it was great to learn more from 2 very experienced bird watchers.
Having the farm in the middle of a "Protected Natural Mountain" gives us the opportunity to explore, discover and appreciate the local wild life more.

AWESOME PLACE!

Two years ago, my husband and I were fortunate to discover this remarkable place . . .With our son living in Barcelona, we were looking for a place where we could "meet" and have quality time together. We were pleased beyond our expectations with the visit. Wanting to share this experience with the rest of our family, in June, 2009, 7 of us had the pleasure of visiting Can Merla with our son and partner. NINE of us spent an unforgettable week there . . .We each had our "own space" i.e. , bedroom, bath, etc and the kitchen is a marvel. Very organized and efficient. . .everything well-maintained and clean.

From the first moment of waking to absolute beauty and stillness to spectacular sunset dinners on the patio, it was a perfect time. The views you are seeing on this site do not even begin to do them justice.

However, Can Merla is located in such a central location that while my husband and I enjoyed quiet walks, reading and just relaxing, our grandchildren enjoyed "getting out and about". During our time there, they visited a Monastery, Cadaques', home of Dali, and the Dali's museum. Then we ALL walked the wall around GIrona (awesome), shopped in little villages, had a 5 star culinary delight at Can Roquet, swam in the Mediterranean, saw the sights and shopped again in Barcelona . . . we made memories that will only become heighten with time and will last a lifetime.

Paradise!!

My husband and two children ages 19 and 20 recently had the great privilege of staying at Can Merla. It was the best trip we've ever had. The house was amazing from each of us having our own private space and bathroom, the fantastic views, the beautiful sunsets, the relaxing pool, the gorgeous grounds, and best of all just being together in such a surreal atmosphere. We toured many areas nearby including a monestary, the wall of Girona, the local beaches, Cadeques, the Dali museum, and Can Roquet, a fabulous restaurant. I would highly recommend this house for anyone who likes to travel.

What more could you ask for?!

My partner and I only had a short weekend to spare and didn't quite know how to spend it - in the hustle and bustle of Barcelona or at a laid back and relaxing guest house in Girona. We picked Girona and arrived late on Friday night and were picked up from the airport and within half an hour we were at the guest house. The house is spectacular! It was apparently recently restored from rubble and is set high in the hills surrounded by lush green forests with beautiful views over Girona and vast mountain ranges in the distance (one could never get bored of these views). The rooms were peaceful and extremely comfortable and I slept like a log every night! We went running each morning on one of the many beautiful trails around the property which was a damn site better than slogging the pavement in London!
The owners were fantastic, giving us information on the local area and beaches (only 30 min drive) and taking us to a local restaurant on our final night.
I've never liked staying at guest houses (well in the UK anyway) but I could not rate this guest house high enough and will definitely be back again and again and again.
Owner's Response: It is indeed amazing how quickly one de-stresses once you arrive at Can Merla.
A small week-end "Break from the City"does wonders for the busy hectic life style most people have these days.

It's always a little worrying booking a villa on-line- will it live up to it's description- but Can Merla far exceeded our expectations. This property has been beautifully restored a perfect combination of style and comfort with everything my family and I could have wished for.
The house is in a beautiful tranquil location but only 30 mins from both the coast and Gerona giving you the best of both worlds.
The owners made us feel very welcome, sharing both their knowledge of the area and their wonderful home grown produce with us.
I would definitely recommend Can Merla and look forward to visiting it again in the future.
