HIllside villa with lovely views

Alice G New Forest
Review Submitted: June 30, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Very impressed with this beautifully situated, light and airy villa. I was met on arrival by a lady who looks after the villa and she was most helpful in explaining how appliances worked etc, very friendly too. The villa itself is set on the side of a hill, within the Gavarres and the views from the lounge and bedrooms are amazing. The pictures do not do the villa justice. There are so many terraces and in fact, each bedroom has its own. The lounge terrace was my favourite, offering great views over the trees and beyond, and was a wonderfully tranquil place to sit of an evening.

As the advert suggests, the bedrooms are indeed positioned enough away from each other to offer privacy. Each has its own en suite bathroom too. The lounge is large and equipped with comfortable seating . The kitchen is well equipped with all you could need too. There is an abundance of outdoor seating, cushions and parasols. On arrival, I found the villa was spotlessly clean too.

The villa is situated only a couple of miles from Calonge and a few miles from the beaches of Sant Antoni. Further along both ways are an abundance of delightful coves and coastal walks, perfect for walking. In fact as an enthusiastic hiker, I have to say this area is fantastic, a real network of trails offering mountain, coastal, woodland and river walks. My favourite beach is Castell, just after Palamos. Beautifully wild with coastal paths heading in both directions.

A nearby restaurant that I would recommend is Rio d'Oro, with beautiful gardens and an unsually designed interior. Sant Joan cafe in Palamos on the sea front makes the best hot chocolate. Oh, and there is a wonderful deli on the Palamos road heading towards Palafrugel. The market in Calonge on Thursday has superb fruit, veg and deli, which is considerably cheaper than the supermarket.

The owner provides excellent customer service and ensured I had Internet working given that I was working whilst on hoilday.
Having stayed in Calonge one a few occasions at various different villas, this one is definitely my favourite and I shall most certainly be returning.
Owner's Response: I feel this client has captured the essence of the place which is why we built the house in this area. She has already booked another stay and enquired for future out of season stays which we hopefully will be able to accommodate.

Hot August!

Pauline MOZ Lancashire
Review Submitted: August 19, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
The villa is situated on a hillside, with lovely views. It was very spacious, with each room having its own terrace or patio. It is about 5 minutes drive from the beach, and not possible to get there without a car. It is a pity that there are not more restaurants within walking distance. In the hot weather, it would have been nice to have a pool - we had to watch next door cooling off!
The ants and lizards were a problem and a little more advice on how to keep them out on arrival would have been appreciated.
Thank you for renting us your villa, we found your agent and yourself very friendly and did enjoy our stay.
Pauline Mark and Emily
Owner's Response: We were glad that Pauline and family enjoyed their stay in our house and area. We comment on the points she made :
We do list the problem with the little black sugar ants in the summer in the Manual left in the house. As all owners find this perennial problem causes some distress to foreign renters we can only advise any rubbish bins to be emptied on a daily basis and all crumbs or even dead insects in form of flies or moths be removed as they are a magnet for the ants once they get a scent. It can be very difficult to stop them entirely, there is no known way to keep them out other than obsessively cleaning up all the time and or spraying or putting down powder - we leave a suitable insect spray in the house at the start of the season. They tend to be more of nuisance factor with their persistence. Sadly lizards or in this case a Ghecko cannot be kept out, they normally live out on the walls but we usually welcome them as they eat both ants and flies and other insects.
There is only one restuarant on the Urbanization at the bottom of the hill, the population during the off season would not warrant another.
We have no pool as indicated on the web page and of course the villa is priced accordingly. Due to the ongoing maintenance costs we are unlikely to add a pool in the future.

Cool April - no heating

Ann W Cumbria United Kingdom
Review Submitted: April 28, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We would agree with the previous reviews. It is a lovely villa in delightful surroundings and all as described. Indeed, the books were a welcome extra and were well used and appreciated as the weather was cool and wet some days as it can be in Northern Spain in April. Unfortunately it was difficult to keep warm indoors as the central heating had been disconnected. A notice on the thermostat informed us 'disconnected, awaiting radiators'. The agent supplied extra bedding, portable heaters and contacted the owner for further guidance. The owner explained that it could take two days to heat up (underfloor heating). In fact it never did.
This was disappointing. It was our fourth visit to Cabanyes in April and we always look for a villa with central heating knowing that it could be needed at this time of the year.
We enjoyed the Medieval festivities in Calonge during Easter weekend and driving to the Medieval villages in the surrounding countryside. We found driving in this area very manageable and pleasant. There is also a good choice of walks from coastal paths to long distance hill walks.
The immediate area offers a good choice of supermarkets and outdoor markets.
Owner's Response: I am very sorry about problems outlined by Ms W despite our best efforts to provide some heating, Ms W did not re-contact my agent when she felt the underfloor heating had still not come on. It was only at the end of the rental that she mentioned this to my agent, We have found that tentants do not like to be disturbed during a rental and my agent had assumed all was well after her initial intervention.
As indicated I did contact Ms W. to let her know that our web page clearly indicates during winter lets heating is charged at cost. Outside winter months, November to March, there is no heating provided. However I assured her that I would not be charging for arranging for some heating because I had not thought to make this clear in my booking confirmation and my agent had confirmed to me that the weather had turned unseasonably cool this year. I providing both electric fan and oil radiators as well as turning on the underfloor heating for the living dining room and hall where it is connected. The notice on the bedroom thermostat is due to the damage done to a previous thermostat by tenants, and we could not leave a hole with wires sticking out of the wall.

I did explain to Ms W that the underfloor heating was water and not electric and therefore would take sometime to take effect, and I explained that the electric fan heater in the lounge would affect the ability of the lounge thermostat to operate correctly. I also indicated that it was not like turning on thermostats controlling radiators which would provide relatively quick heating, the temperature level would be a slow increase in the ambient room temperature. Ms W assured me that she knew about all about underfloor heating. I understand from my agent that the controls on the boiler were all correct, the thermostat was set correctly and the boiler fired when she first set the thermostat, and as we had been in the house some 3 weeks previously with no problems with the heating I have no reason to think that the heating was not working, I can only assume that fan heating in the lounge being kept on must have interfered with the thermostat function.

I note that Ms W reports that she seeks out properties with central heating, but did not actually mention this fact to me at time of booking.
It is always a pity when tenants do not mention these things at the time, so they can be rectified rather than wait to the end of the tenancy when there is little that can be done.

August holiday review

holidaysue Surrey, England
Review Submitted: September 11, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
The villa was as described, although the downstairs twin beds were too low and soft, only suitable for children. Good facilities and fantastic views, shame there were so many ants!
The property is very well situated to visit lots of local attractions, including Barcelona and Girona. The local beaches were lovely and clean.
Owner's Response: We are pleased to find the facilities and views were enjoyed, we are aware of the bed shortcomings and intend to have the beds raised shortly. In fact some Tenants have found the other beds too firm and the 2nd bedroom was intended for children but due to the demand from 2 couples we will make changes there. Ants are a perennial problem in the area, apart from their tendency to come in for the smallest particles of food or sweet things which might get left out, sometimes they seem to come into the house if rain is in the offing. We do mention some solutions in our handbook left in the house.

An enjoyable holiday

Sarah-Ann France
Review Submitted: July 23, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
We enjoyed our stay very much. The house was clean, modern and comfortable, and though not huge, it still felt spacious, just what we needed after 3 years in a crumbly old farm house in France. The neighbouring villas were not a bother, we didn't feel too overlooked and it was a quiet area.

The garden was small but had a good barbecue and there were three excellant balconies for sunbathing or eating in the open. It was nice looking out over olive trees, and the views of the densely wooded valleys and hills were lovely. From the top balcony we could see the sea!

The trip to the sea was 5 - 10 minutes by car, and we went most days, exploring different sandy coves and beaches until we found one that suited us with the right mixture of sun and shade. There are masses of small cafes and restaraunts to choose from all along the coast too. Good local supermarkets too for the self catering bit.

Pleasant neighbours advised us to go to Begur, a little further north on the coast. This medieval town has a music festival in July. Fascinating, and shops and markets open in the evening during the festival. We could have done more siteseeing but were content with two trips out as we went for a rest! A good read too, I enjoyed the choice of books, and could have stayed on another week just to read more of them!

Barcelona and La Sacrada Familia is a must, but we found it a tiring trip. Apparantly the train connection is good, and would take much of the effort out of the day!

All in all a very good holiday.
Owner's Response: A pleasure to read the enjoyment of this family, reinforced all the reasons why we too love the area. Very pleasant family who respected our house and belongings and cleaned up wonderfully. Have put some stickers on the glassdoors to the patio thanks to them for the suggestion.
