The area is known as the Costa Tropical because of the all year round sunny climate. Almunecar and its handsome Moorish castle sit on a small hill between the mouths of two rivers. Almunecar has managed to retain the atmosphere and character of an old Spanish town with winding narrow streets and tapas bars. Besides tourism, fishing and the growing of tropical fruits remain at the heart of the town's day to day life. To the west of the town is the Punta de la Mona, a pine clad headland sheltering the attractive Marina del Este which offers a range of water sports. Beyond is the pretty horse shoe bay of La Herradura. Along the coastline are numerous beaches and sheltered coves. To the east is the whitewashed village of Salobrena with the peaks of the Sierra Nevada in the background. One and half hour drive to the ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada or the beautiful countryside of the Alpujjaras. One hour from the historic city of Granada with the amazing Alhambra palace and gardens.
