Casa Almendra (house of almonds) is our peaceful family home in Salobreña. It is an attractive villa, with a rustic feel and panoramic views over the town, with its castle, and the sea. The main accommodation – lounge, kitchen, principle bedroom and the heated swimming pool - is all on the same level as the terrace, which is perfect for outdoor dining. The large and airy lounge has great sea views and is distinguished by its lofty ceiling with its wooden beams, reputed to come from a local sugar mill. For the cooler months there is a wood burning fireplace. The other three bedrooms are on the same level as the mature garden with masses of bougainvillea and other colourful flowers and a lawned area that is shaded by fruit trees, including orange, lemon, plum and almond – you can help yourself in season. The villa is protected from the prevailing south-west winds but, being in an elevated position on the hillside, it catches a cooling breeze in summer.

Casa Almendra is situated on a south-east facing hillside overlooking the historic and unspoilt 'pueblo blanco' (white town) of Salobreña, with its Moorish castle. This is the heart of the “Costa Tropical de Granada”, where Spanish people take their holidays. It is on the edge of the built-up area (guests love to hear the sound of bells that announce the passing of the goats that graze on the hillside above the house) but its beaches, bars, shops and restaurants are only minutes away. Here you will enjoy both cooler summers than the Costa del Sol and mainland Europe's warmest winters, thanks to the local micro climate created by the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The historic city of Granada and the spectacular Alhambra Palace are only 45 minutes to the north. In just 70 minutes the more active visitors can be skiing on the snow of the Sierra Nevada in winter, or walking in the magnificent Alpujarras or the more beautiful but lesser known Peña Escrita nature reserve.

  • The main double bedroom has a built-in wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom. It is on the same floor as the living room and the kitchen, both of which have doors directly onto the main terrace. This makes the accommodation very flexible; as suitable for a quiet break for a couple, as for a family holiday. The other three bedrooms (one double and two twin) are on the lower floor, which has direct access to the garden. They all have built-in wardrobes, while the double bedroom has an en-suite shower room. The other two twin-bedded rooms share the downstairs bathroom and one, which is separated from the hall by curtains, can also be used as an extra sitting room, with French windows to the garden. Extra bedding is available.

Notes: There is a separate laundry room downstairs in the main house, with a washing machine and drying and ironing equipment. It has its own exit to the garden. There is also a large detached garden room that could be used as a second sitting room or possible as a games room for younger guests. Most visitors simply park on the street immediately outside the villa but a lockable garage is available on request.

Salobreña and the Costa Tropical: Salobrena and the Costa Tropical in general are where you can enjoy the authentic Spain. This is the heart of the “Costa Tropical de Granada”, where Spanish people take their holidays, with tapas bars and restaurants serving authentic Spanish cuisine, at Spanish prices. In Salobreña itself, there is the 'casco antiguo', a maze of narrow streets, white-washed houses, alleys and steep staircases leading up to the old town square and the Moorish castle. The beachfront has many restaurants, with tables on the sand. Nearby there is the vibrant town of Motril, the holiday resort of Almuñecar, with its markets and Roman ruins, and La Herradura with its pretty and sophisticated harbour – Marina del Este. Most of our guests find that the pace of life is a welcome and refreshing change from the more commercialised parts of Spain and quickly fall in love with the area.

Swimming Pool: The attractive swimming pool is on the main terrace, just a few steps down from the doors to the lounge and the kitchen. The shallow end, covering around a quarter of the pool, is about one metre deep, while the rest of the pool is 1.8 metres deep. The pool is available for use right round the year as it can be heated, when needed in the cooler months, by an energy efficient heat pump. There is an additional charge for this of €10.00 (ten euros) per day, to cover the cost of the additional electricity that will be used.

What to do and where to go: There is a lot to do in the area, although many of our guests seem to end up spending most of their time relaxing by the pool. However, we provide a detailed guide that tells you everything you need to know about the house and the area, including where to shop, where to eat and local attractions. We also have a large library, with local guides, maps, Spanish cookbooks, books on the history of Spain, as well as a large collection of novels. There are also lots of board games available to use. Should you need anything during your stay, you can ring our local agents or call at their office, which is only 5 minutes away, on the way into town. They have a team of handymen, plumbers and electricians and can respond promptly, should anything go wrong.
