Mojacar, for the more discerning of people:
One of the best features of the Playa is the vast sandy beach and the proximity of the bars/restaurants to our house, most within walking distance. But the best, in our and our guests opinion, is the wonderful panoramic views from the balcony day or night. Its so great to wake up on a sunny morning and have breakfast on the balcony or so romantic to star-gaze well above the Playa while sipping a glass of wine or take a short walk and stroll along the promenade or sit on/by the beach listening to the sea with a bottle of wine then walk home. Come and try it. Temperatures during Easter (April) and Christmas can reach 25c. The beautiful Mojacar Pueblo is your quintasential white washed village perched on a rocky hilltop and is the centre of attention and a must to visit for all sorts of gifts. Inland, especially in the lush and green Sierra Cabrera Mountains, is more spectacular scenery with many small villages hidden from view. Beware, some of the roads are not for the feint of heart.
Activities in and around Mojacar:
With a wonderfully dry warm climate Mojacar is a must for those who suffer from asthma or hayfeaver. Enjoy the bustling markets which are held in Garrucha and Vera once a week. The local supermarkets are a revelation, it's good value, cheap and fresh - try before you buy more olives than you knew existed.
To get to our house you park your car, open the gate, walk up 2 steps to the grassed pool area (10 paces from the front of the house) and walk 40 paces to the house. Easy.
During the summer there is a large water-park for the kids at Vera - ten minutes drive; also try a round of mini-golf, horse riding (even for first timers) go-carting or just sun yourself on the beautiful golden sandy beach at the bottom of the road from our house. Visit Mini-Hollywood in the Tabernas Desert 1 hour away. Its where the Spaghetti Westerns were shot. Participate in a 'shoot out' and dressing up in Western clothes for a family photograph.
For posh shops try Almeria, an hour's drive away.
Eating and Drinking:
Eating out in Mojacar and its surrounding villages and towns is an experience not to be missed. The area's gastronomy is varied catering for seafood enthusiasts, vegetarians and meat eaters alike. You can try Spanish, Italian, German, Argentinean or Chinese fare; all at very reasonable prices.
The beautiful old village of Mojacar, a 5-minute drive away, is full of character and charm. Its labyrinth of cobbled walkways and streets offer a variety of restaurants, bars, tourist shops and quaint Spanish shops as well as spectacular views of the surrounding areas.
Along the Playa are numerous bars/restaurants actually on the beach, most of which you can walk to from the house. We also have up market air-conditioned cafes and ice-cream parlours.
The beauty of this location is that many conveniences are within walking distance of our home, meaning you can have a wonderful night out or take a stroll along the seashore without having to drive home. You have to try it to believe it.
Golf:
Valle del Este, an 18-hole PGA golf course, has been carefully designed along the lines of the courses in the American desert of Arizona and California paying careful attention to every detail and integrating the course into the surrounding landscape to combine holes that represent a real challenge to the player. Undoubtedly this has been designed to play host to Championship events. The views are stunning but don’t let them affect your concentration as very few wayward shots are forgiven. It has its own beach club, restaurant, bar and pool, which is situated directly on the unspoilt Vera Beach
Desert Springs, the PGA overseas home, designed by successful Walker Cup captain, Peter McEvoy, is the only desert course in Europe) located between Villaricos and Cuaves de Almanzora. One is either on lush fairway or chipping back into position from the rugged desert terrain.
Marina Golf, this Ramón Espinosa design is highly unusual in that it spans each side of the hills that overlooks Mojacar bay. This means that after two relatively straightforward opening holes, the par five, 3rd involves a drive from one of the highest raised tees you are ever likely to encounter. Nearly 200 feet drop. Don’t measure your distance off the tee, measure “airtime”. The remaining holes on this side of the hill are very tight but when you return to the more open, ocean side, three lakes strategically placed conspire to trap any misplaced drive.
All are within a 10 minute drive from our house.
